Announcer
Welcome to Stuff Mom Never Told You from howstuffworks.com.
Cristen
Hey there, and welcome to the podcast. I’m Cristen.
Molly
And I’m Molly.
Cristen
Molly, quick question, don’t even think. Edward or Bill?
Molly
I don’t even know who those people are.
Cristen
What? Where have you been? Have you been under a rock? You don’t have a preference for Edward Cullen or Bill? Bill, Molly? Okay, evidently Molly has not joined in with the vampire craze.
Molly
I haven’t. I think I’m the only one. That made research for this podcast really hard.
Cristen
Yeah, I’m referring to Edward Cullen, the sparkly, dreamy vampire starring in the Twilight series. And Bill, Sookie Stackhouse’s vampire lover in the Southern Vampire series that has now been turned into a show on HBO called True Blood.
Molly
Yeah, I do feel left out. I do feel like maybe I should get on the vampire train.
Cristen
Yeah.
Molly
Because everywhere I turn, people are talking about how, hey, vampires, they’re everywhere.
Cristen
Vampires are everywhere, and when we were asking for reading lists, I don’t know how many times we got women saying, “Hey, yeah, I’m reading Twilight.” Or, “I’m reading the Sookie Stackhouse books.” And they’re always a little sheepish about it, like, “I’m just doing it for fun. It’s just beach reading.” But you know, whatever. It’s juicy.
Molly
Apparently they’re everywhere.
Cristen
It’s juicy stuff. So we’re in the midst of a vampire craze. There’s this new vampire teen show. It’s like Dawson’s Creek with vampires. Which makes me a little bit intrigued by that. And Molly and I just wanted to know, why are women so attracted to vampires?
Molly
Because they’re undead. Like let’s remember that.
Cristen
Thanks. That would hurt.
Molly
Exactly.
Cristen
Yeah, a lot of reasons against being attracted to vampires. But nevertheless we are.
Molly
So as has become apparently clear, I do not really know much about vampires. So we had to go to an expert.
Cristen
Yes.
Molly
And boy, did we find an expert.
Cristen
Yes. We found the author of the Southern Vampire series and a whole host of other novels, Charlaine Harris. So we asked her, “Why are women attracted to vampires?”
Charlaine Harris
I think that women are very attracted to the idea of someone who’s been around for years and years, and presumably having made love for all of those years, is someone who is very talented and understanding about the woman’s point of view when it comes to having sex.
Molly
Whoa, Charlaine.
