The Tech of Doctor Who | July 28, 2010

Chris Pollette

Judging from his quote at the time, it was essentially his version of Spinal Tap’s “This One Goes to Eleven.”

Jonathan Strickland

Right. We’re already up to over 20 minutes, so what I’m going to do now is we’ve already talked about the TARDIS, and the sonic screwdriver, and we talked about the Master. I knew we had to get those, but there’s one other thing we have to hit. There’s so many other elements to this show, because the show, of course, has been on and off the air since 1963, so lots of history there. Plus all the books, and comic books, and audio plays, and things of that nature.

Chris Pollette

We could’ve had probably three podcasts on the TARDIS, period.

Tracy Wilson

Yes.

Jonathan Strickland

Let’s talk about Daleks though.

Tracy Wilson

Daleks are fun.

Jonathan Strickland

Daleks are one of the really recognizable villains that are in the Doctor Who universe.

Tracy Wilson

Are you all going to throw me out of the studio if I tell Dalek jokes?

Jonathan Strickland

It couldn’t be any worse than anything that I’ve ever told, ever.

Chris Pollette

Exactly. It’s sort of a hallmark of this podcast.

Jonathan Strickland

If it’s all things that end up ending in innate -

Tracy Wilson

Yeah.

Jonathan Strickland

The thing they were known to say, especially in the early series, was, “Exterminate. Exterminate.” That was what they would yell as they would close in on the heroes – close in very slowly, because they are these big cone-shaped things.

Tracy Wilson

And not upstairs.

Jonathan Strickland

And not upstairs in the original series either. A flight of stairs could foil the most cunning Dalek.

Daleks have two different origins according to Doctor Who’s mythology. Really, the one that has been established and has been followed most recently is that they started out as a race of organic creatures. They had a war with a neighboring race of aliens. The race that became the Daleks were known as the Kaleds, of course another anagram there. The Kaleds began to mutate as a result of some of the nuclear war that was going on, as well as they were just undergoing some genetic mutations.

A fellow by the name of Davros decided, “I wonder what these things are going to end up turning into.” He also by the way, was very much injured in the war between his people, the Kaleds, and the Thals, the opponent race. As a result, he had to create a chair that kept him alive and would allow him to sense his environment because all his faculties were pretty much destroyed as a result of the war.
