Dogs can be very smart. My dog Trixie is not the brightest bulb in the chandelier, but even she has moments of temporary brilliance. If you take the time to really train a dog, the results can be spectacular. Like this: You look at that and may think, “that’s a total fluke”, but it’s not. [...]
World Record #156 – The world’s longest snowmobile jump
by Marshall Brain | December 22, 2010
This is a rather amazing video showing famed snowmobiler Levi LaVallee jumping 361 feet through the air on a snowmobile: Given that this jump took place in San Diego – a place that never sees snow – how did they do it? Snowmobiles are very happy to ride on grass: By extension, therefore, they will [...]
World Record #155 – Amazing Navy railgun shoots shells farthest and fastest
by Marshall Brain | December 13, 2010
Military organizations have been shooting stuff out of cannons for centuries. You take a strong steel tube that is closed off at one end, put in some gunpowder, put in a projectile (either a cannon ball or an artillery shell) and then light it. The expansion of the burning gunpowder creates a force that shoots [...]
World Record #153 – The fastest remote-controlled airplanes
by Marshall Brain | November 15, 2010
There are two ways to reach 400 MPH with a radio-controlled airplane. One is to put a small, powerful jet engine on it: The engine is a JetCat P160, as shown here: JetCat P160 This engine weighs only 3.1 pounds but produces 36 pounds of thrust. It burns about a half a liter of fuel [...]
World Record #151 – the tallest climbing wall in the world
by Marshall Brain | October 26, 2010
Normally when people talk about “climbing walls”, they are talking about fairly modest structures. This one from the Independence of the Seas cruise ship is 43 feet tall: Here is an indoor wall, and toward the end of the video there is a shot of the tower that goes 35 meters high: The previous wall [...]
Imagine a house that is 27 stories tall. And six of those stories are for the parking garage for 160 cars. Imagine a house that covers 37,000 square meters (nearly 400,000 square feet)(as big as 160 “normal houses” (2,500 square feet each) in the United States). It’s that big in part because it has a [...]
Imagine filling your gas tank in Boston and driving all the way down the east coast to Miami on a single tank of gas. A Volkswagen Passat Bluemotion car with minor modifications has done that: Passat BlueMotion enters record books after going 1,527 miles without refueling; that’s 74.8 mpg What makes it possible for this [...]

World Record #147 – The biggest skate park in the world
by Marshall Brain | September 14, 2010
I don’t even ride a skateboard and this world record skate park is still amazing. The scale, the scope, the civil engineering challenges… it is impressive…
The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport is the fastest production car in the world with a Guinness Book of Records speed of 268 MPH:
Bugatti Veyron Super Sport Sets 268 MPH Top Speed Record
But that is kind of old news. The new news is that SSC may be about to release the car that will beat the Veyron and set a new record. That car is described here…
