Whether they’re just too horrifying to look away from, or they’re somehow good for us, we just can’t seem to keep our eyes off of some things that are truly, truly hard to watch. Why do we watch these things?

There are some places where finding a body part is, while likely startling for the finder, contextually allowable. Anyone wandering around a morgue, lifting up sheets and opening drawers like some gawking rube should be wholly unsurprised by anything he finds. This one is sure to provoke some strong opinions. An Arizona man brought his assault rifle to a protest against President Obama’s health care plan yesterday in Phoenix. The President was there giving a speech to a veterans group.

The rifle toting man also had a handgun holstered at his hip and a full clip sticking out of his back pocket. And he wasn’t alone. Apparently there were about a dozen armed protesters. While they were protesting the health care plan, they decided to kill two birds with one Uzi and make a statement about the right to bear arms.

Since there’s no longer a law against assault rifles and no law against carrying a non-concealed weapon without a permit in Arizona, no charges or arrests were made. I think this can best be described as a slippery slope. The right to bear arms is one of the fundamental rights Americans have. And boy do we love our guns.

Just when you thought Iraq was making some genuine progress toward a free society comes this story from CNN.com about the torturing and killing of suspected homosexual men in Iraq. They report that hundreds of men have been victim to such treatment in recent months.

What’s even more troubling is that the new government in Iraq seems to be turning a blind eye to this travesty of human rights. While government officials claim to be against this kind of thing, they’re quick to accept any responsibility, saying that they are unable to provide special protection for them. Four anonymous victims were interviewed for the piece and they relate stories about how the violence against them has increased in recent months.
