With the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) right around the corner, expect to see lots of news about video games over the next few weeks. We’ll be sending Holly Frey, our new tech editor, to get a first-hand look at the newest developments in gaming. That will include a glimpse at the successor to the Nintendo Wii. But before we dive into rumors, we should look at the news. We’ll start with the recent price cut for the Nintendo Wii.

A piece of news broken by Reuters raised my eyebrows to the surprise level of “mildly shocked” this morning — John Schappert, the chief operating officer of EA, is leaving the company. What’s more, Schappert may be leaving to join rival game company Zynga. That’s the company responsible for cluttering up your Facebook News feed with updates from all your buddies who are obsessed with FarmVille, CityVille and VilleVille. I may have made up one of those games.

As I was scanning the news in the tech world, my eyes caught sight of a story I couldn’t pass up. It was on msnbc.com and it focused on a study conducted by our friends at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). They took a group of willing volunteers, attached some wires to the volunteers’ craniums and then zapped them with two milliamps of electricity. The volunteers played a game used by soldiers to train for combat.

Irrational Games’ “Bioshock Infinite” panel is the one big video game thing I did at PAX East. I spent some time in Indie Alley (obviously) looking at independent games, but I didn’t wait in line for anything hands-on in the Exhibit Hall, and I didn’t go to any of the other panels that were about specific games. And even when I wound up in line for the “Bioshock” panel, it was as much about being at the right place at the right time as it was about really liking the “Bioshock” franchise and wanting to know about the next installment. (I did plan poorly, though, and realized once I was in the line that I was really, really thirsty, so thanks to Chicazul for not only bringing me beverages, but getting an Enforcer to let her into the panel to hand them over.)

I’ve read the news that bedtime gaming causes problems with sleep in two different places today — Kotaku and Kotaku’s source, U.S. News and World Report. Both cited the National Sleep Foundation’s 2011 “Sleep in America” poll, the results of which were released today.

Funny thing is, both Kotaku and U.S. News talk about findings that aren’t actually related to pinpointing a correlation between gaming and lack of sleep.

Here is a typical review of the recently released Battlefield 3 trailer: Battlefield 3 is simply amazing The buzz surrounding the release of the game play trailer for Battlefield 3 has shaken the PC gaming community to the core. Last week I wrote about the risqué Ubisoft title “We Dare.” A couple of people brought up the point that even though the game is rated 12 in Europe, it’s clearly not marketed for tweens and teens. This is completely true, and I definitely wasn’t trying to insinuate anything along the lines of, “A game company is going after the innocence of our youth, oh, think of the children!”

Full disclosure: As a giant, giant nerd, I never played spin the bottle. I’m actually not sure whether spin the bottle is a real thing, or if it’s only something that happens in tween movies and Judy Blume novels. But spin the bottle and the juvenile appeal thereof is what I thought of when TechStuff’s Jonathan Strickland sent me a link to the video below. Warning: It’s safe for work, I suppose, but it’s suggestive. And awkward and embarrassing.

I always feel weirdly vindicated when something my mom advocated when I was a kid turns out to have some evidential teeth to it.  She was right on seat belts, healthy snacks and, as it turns out, how long children should spend playing games. Her time limit — which, to be fair, I broke as [...]
