“Downton Abbey”! It’s a runaway hit by PBS standards. And, really, by premium cable drama standards. Which is … weird. Especially if you, like, me grew up under the specter of PBS shame, thanks to your love of “Square One.”

We’ve all experienced the heartbreak of losing a favorite show too soon. It’s pretty common knowledge that bad ratings are the usual cause of a show’s demise, but it turns out, there are many reasons ratings suffer. This time, we look at the factors that make shows, good and bad, disappear.

Know what I hate? Cliffhangers. Holly doesn’t mind them so much, but the more cliffhangers a show has, the more likely I am to check out on it. Here are some of the whats and whys we talked about.
I’ve lived in the South all my life. Holly has lived all over, but she’s in the South now, too. And we’ve taken this opportunity to get all riled up about how the South and southerners are portrayed in the worlds of television and film. It’s not that no one in the South does the things we’re talking about … it’s that the portrayals stick mostly to the same tropes and traits.

I’m Holly’s boss, and this episode is about terrible bosses, so recording this episode wasn’t awkward at all. I kid. We talk about good bosses, too.
