I’ve lived in the South all my life. Holly has lived all over, but she’s in the South now, too. And we’ve taken this opportunity to get all riled up about how the South and southerners are portrayed in the worlds of television and film. It’s not that no one in the South does the things we’re talking about … it’s that the portrayals stick mostly to the same tropes and traits.
PopStuff Show Notes: Episode 27, TV Bosses We Love and Love to Hate
by Tracy V. Wilson | December 26, 2011
I’m Holly’s boss, and this episode is about terrible bosses, so recording this episode wasn’t awkward at all. I kid. We talk about good bosses, too.
Three Medical Facts the Characters on ‘Walking Dead’ Should Know
by Tracy V. Wilson | November 21, 2011
I’ve been complaining a lot about “The Walking Dead” this season. I thought my complaint was that the story doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. Example: We’re six episodes in, and we’ve still neither found Sophia nor stopped looking for her.
This weekend I watched an amazing video on YouTube. It is called Talking Funny, and it had been broken up into 4 parts and posted. It features Jerry Seinfeld, Louis C.K., Chris Rock and Ricky Gervais sitting together in a room talking about their craft. It is utterly amazing because it lets you get inside [...]
I confess: I have a “Grey’s Anatomy” problem. The problem is that I watch “Grey’s Anatomy.”
It all started when I visited my parents at the start of season 6. My mother’s a fan, and I wound up seeing all but the first few minutes of the season premiere. Once I got home again, the question of who one of the characters was kept needling at me, and I finally watched the beginning of the episode on Hulu to figure it out. That’s when I realized the whole thing had been the resolution to cliffhangers that ended season 5, so I watched that episode, too.

Today’s Time-waster: Watching All-of-everything Videos
by Tracy V. Wilson | January 25, 2011
One of my favorite TV shows right now is “Leverage.” And one of my favorite running gags on “Leverage” is a joke I don’t think it’s touched on in a while. Eliot Spencer (Christian Kane, also of “Angel” and a bunch of stuff I’ve never watched) will describe something that’s going on. He’ll spot a specific detail — the kind of gun being used, the backgrounds of the hired bodyguards. One of the others in the “Leverage” version of the Scooby Gang will say, “How do you know X is Y?” Eliot’s answer: “It’s a really distinctive [whatever it is].” The gun had a very distinctive “crack” when it fired. The bodyguards had very distinctive haircuts. You get the idea.
I went to YouTube to see whether some ingenious person had put together a montage of all of Eliot’s “very distinctive” whatevers. No luck. Nor has anybody made a video of every time he tells somebody, “You have a tell.”
There are plenty of other “all-of-the-times-X-happens” videos, though. So I thought I’d share. I’d start with a few from “The Wire,” but they’re all NSFW, so here are some substitutes instead.
Could Illinois State Government Be Turned into a Reality TV Show?
by Marshall Brain | January 4, 2011
Reading the following article, even as someone who has no connection at all to the state of Illinois, is depressing: Illinois Has Days to Plug $13 Billion Deficit That Took Years to Produce The legislative session that began today as the House convened will take aim at a budget deficit of at least $13 billion, [...]
Up until 2010, it was generally assumed that if you were looking at something “live”, you were seeing reality. Yes, photos could be photoshopped into non-reality, and movies bend reality all the time with special effects. But a live feed was thought to be an accurate view of reality. No more: It is called Diminished [...]
5 Things in ‘The Walking Dead’ That Just Don’t Make Sense
by Tracy V. Wilson | November 16, 2010
“The Walking Dead” is one of those shows that flew somewhat under my radar until suddenly my Twitter app was overrun after it premiered. I’d known it was filming in Atlanta and was expected to be good, but I hadn’t expected quite the massive response it wound up getting. I bought a season pass on iTunes but didn’t actually get to watch until yesterday. My response in three sentences: It’s predictable. It doesn’t make sense. I love it.
Now, on to the spoilers.
