Tipping has taken a hit during the recession. Not only are people trying to spend less when they go out, but service industry employees also report that many patrons are skimping on their tips. And since the service sector includes everyone from restaurant servers to hair dressers to baristas and so on, that’s a lot of folks who are hurting from the collective stinginess.

Certainly, it’s hard to part with those extra dollars when living on a tight budget, but I’m a firm believer in the importance of tipping. Leaving behind a fair tip can breed generous service down the road, especially when it comes to places you visit on a regular basis. At the same time, that begs the question of what constitutes a fair tip.
