When Apple announced yesterday that the Beatles are now on iTunes, I didn’t expect the general sense of dismissive petulance that the Internet shot back. The vast majority of the coverage I read was somewhere between bored and negative. NPR’s Monkey See blog rounded up 10 of the best “who cares” tweets, including one from Wil Wheaton that surprised me a little, since he’s usually a big advocate of the idea that what’s old and tired to one person is fresh and exciting to another. (It was probably intended as more of a jab at Apple’s hype machine leading up to the announcement, which was, admittedly, very hype-y but still.) The Huffington Post’s roundup of tweets has a similar feeling of “meh.”

In “You Never Give Me Your Money” on “Abbey Road,” Paul McCartney sings “out of college, money spent/see no future/pay no rent/all the money’s gone/nowhere to go.” Many young Beatles fans can probably relate to that post-college malaise of searching around for the next step after putting in your four years (or maybe that was just me…).

Well, search no more aimless — yet college-educated — Beatles buff! Those countless hours spent ensconced on dorm futons, cruising through the Fab Four’s catalogue, debating George Harrison’s underrated musical merits and playing “Revolver vs. Rubber Soul” can now be put to good use.

Today we’ll finally find out what Apple has in store in its long-awaited 9/9/09 press event. But believe it or not, there are other news events in the world of technology that have nothing to do with Apple. Here’s a quick look at some stories you might miss while you’re feverishly refreshing whichever liveblogging site you’ve latched on to for the day. And don’t worry, later today our own Chris Pollette will blog about all things Apple as well.

Palm unveiled its second smartphone running on the same operating system as the Pre. It’s called the Pixi. It’s a cute little candy bar phone with a complete keyboard at the base. It’ll be available on the Sprint network in the United States just like its bigger brother. There’s no word yet on pricing but Palm says to expect the smartphone to be on store shelves before the holiday season.

The Beatles edition of Rock Band launches today. The game lets you play through songs spanning the career of the Fab Four. You can strum the bass like McCartney, play sublime melodies like Harrison or . . . do whatever it was that Ringo did. In the future, players will be able to purchase entire Beatles albums as downloadable content. The game also introduces vocal harmonies to the Rock Band family of games. I got to play this at E3 in June and I have to say it was a thrill. Also, today’s the day when the remastered version of the entire Beatles discography hits the streets.

More news stories behind the jump.

The show floor for E3 is finally open, and my first stop is MTV Games. MTV’s booth features a recreation of the famous Abbey Road studios. That makes sense — the main game on display is The Beatles edition of the popular Rock Band game. The new game will have players assuming the roles of the Fab Four.
