It’s official, there is an Apple tablet, and it’s named the iPad. Note the similarity in name to the iPod. And actually, it looks like a bit of an overgrown iPod Touch, the hottest seller in the iPod line. I’ve been following Erica Ogg’s live blog of Steve Jobs’ announcement from the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, Calif.

It’s been quite the year for rumors about Apple. There were rumors that Steve Jobs would step down (he didn’t). There were rumors that the new iPod Touch would have a camera (it doesn’t). And then there are the rumors surrounding the mythical Apple tablet device.

Over at TechStuff, we’ve been chasing these rumors all year long. The most prolific source of information has been Apple’s supply chain. Most of what we know about this device comes from information gleaned from the companies that supply the tablet’s parts. But much of the tablet remains a mystery. We aren’t sure what kind of operating system it will use. We don’t even know how Apple will market it.

This could put the tablet in the same general competitive space as the Kindle and Nook. Could the Tablet simply be an Apple-branded e-reader device?

Since the Beatles Rock Band and the remastered CDs were coming out, would the trifecta become complete with the Beatles’ catalog finally coming to iTunes?

Do you remember all the buzz about Google Android last year? Before T-Mobile unveiled the HTC-G1, rumors were flying around the Internet about the operating system. Excitement was running high. Then the HTC-G1 debuted and excitement died down a little. The hardware didn’t blow anyone away and some said the G1′s battery drained too quickly. But fans of the Android platform held out hope — after all, unlike the Apple iPhone, the Android platform is available for any handset manufacturer and cell phone carrier to use in their phones. In theory, we should see dozens of devices running on the Android operating system.

But adoption has been slow — for months, the G1 was the only Android phone available. Even now, we only know of a few Android devices that will come to market this year. And T-Mobile, the cell phone carrier that brought the first Android phone to the United States, is leading the way.
