I was surprised to hear the news today: HP is discontinuing the development of webOS devices. Back at CES 2009, I thought webOS had a real chance at making a big splash in the smartphone market. I wasn’t alone. The new operating system from Palm looked flashy and responsive. Granted, most of us couldn’t get our hands on the Palm Pre at the show — Palm was very protective of its new smartphone. But the buzz was strong and it looked like Palm had a shot of competing against the iPhone and Android platforms.
PlayBook Gets a Launch Date, BlackBerry Says Game On
by Jonathan Strickland | March 22, 2011
Today is the first official day of the CTIA 2011 conference in Orlando, Florida. CTIA is the International Association for the Wireless Telecommunications Industry. The day has already started off with a bang as RIM announced the official launch date for the anticipated BlackBerry tablet called the PlayBook. The device hits store shelves on April 19 and you can preorder a device today.
Last week Hewlett-Packard held a press conference to announce how the company would be using the WebOS operating system it acquired when it picked up Palm last year. HP said it would be releasing new phones and tablets with the OS on them, a move that doesn’t really seem so surprising given the positive things the media were saying about WebOS upon its debut.
While looking around the Web today, I ran across an article in Electronista about a tablet directed specifically at the grade-school educational market. It’s powered by Google’s Android operating system, and promises to be a interesting-looking tool for school.
The device is the Brainchild Kineo. It’s got a dual-core 800-MHz processor and a 7-inch screen with 800 by 480-pixel resolution. Students will be able to link to WiFi networks and work for 10 to 12 hours, according to Electronista.
Here is Andy Rubin’s demo on Motorola’s 10″ tablet prototype running the next version of Android (called Honeycomb) at the D: Get Into Mobile Conference: More on the Tegra processor: The Nvidia Tegra chip PCMag describes it here: The Tablet version of Android makes its debut on a large-screen Motorola device The roughly 10-inch, Motorola [...]
Yesterday afternoon I read a Reuters article by Liana B. Baker, in which I found out about the three new tablets the company has to offer. According to Baker’s article, Acer’s CEO Gianfranco Lanci showed off 4.8-inch, 7-inch and 10.1-inch tablet devices, all three of which are going to run Android 3.0, though Acer will also release a 10.1-inch tablet that runs a version of Microsoft Windows.
Last night, when I was procrastinating working on something else, I ran across an article about how the government of India has announced that it’s releasing a $35 tablet. I don’t remember exactly which media outlet I saw it in, but it’s been covered in many places, such as this article in Bloomberg Businessweek by John Ribeiro.
Imagine taking the idea behind a tablet computer like the iPad and giving it the immense screen real estate of two 14.1-inch LCD screens. This product exists and is called the Kno…
So my friend Rob here at HowStuffWorks.com asked me yesterday if I had seen anything about the new Google tablet, and I had to admit, I hadn’t — nor was I surprised that there might be a tablet coming from Google. Ashlee Vance and Nick Bilton over at The New York Times reported on the rumored device…
Over the weekend I spotted a headline that caught my attention. Apparently Sony is ready to launch a whole new slate of handheld devices aimed at helping them regain market share the company has lost to its competitors. Daisuke Wakabayashi and Yukari Iwatani Kane wrote about the company’s plans for The Wall Street Journal.
