I love spending time outside, so in the interest of not roasting my brains out this summer now that I’m sans-apartment-complex-pool, I decided to get a little aboveground pool for the yard. It’s about 10 feet across and 2 feet high. I got it filled up last night and it’s perfect for lounging in (but not for diving in! heed the warning, people, or your neck might explode!) and I’m really looking forward to spending hot afternoons hanging out in it. Question now is — how to keep it clean.
I’d wager that around 99.9 percent of “swimsuit season” anxiety perpetuated by advertising and weight-loss articles are targeted toward women and girls (Men’s Health subscribers, correct me if I’m wrong here). Why? Because guys don’t have to flaunt it all in a bikini, so they have no reason to be body conscious, right?
Yesterday, I received my first pool invitation of 2011. The sun was beating like a bongo here in Atlanta, and my sunglasses were slowly slipping down my face due to sweat when the prospect of a pool popped up. But the first reflexive thought in my to-pool-or-not-to-pool decision had nothing to do with the heat.
How will you look in a swimsuit? Are you really bikini-ready, Conger?
And all of a sudden, it has changed from Summer to Fall

Yesterday I went to go for a walk in the evening. I do this just about every day, either by myself or as a “family walk”. Before going out the door I check the thermometer. The evening readings over the past couple of months have been things like “97″, “92″, “98″, “95″. Always in the [...]
If you take a look at How Air Conditioners Work you can see that a typical air conditioner is a very simple thing. It has an electric motor that runs a compressor, and everything else in the system is passive – tube on the hot side and cold side, plus an expansion valve.
The only problem with the existing system is that the electric motor needs a lot of electricity to spin the compressor. In the summertime, a sizable portion of the power grid is dedicated to feeding the electricity needs of air conditioners.
Now there may be an alternative that uses a lot less electricity…
I have a hardcore fuzzbutt of a longhaired cat, and since the temperature in Atlanta repeatedly tops 90 and even 100 degrees during the summer months, every spring she is hauled over to my family’s house where my sister graciously gives her a shave for me. Sort of. The little one isn’t exactly a fan of these proceedings — even though we do use a very quiet shaver specifically for this purpose — so we usually just give her a modified lion cut and call it a day. The result, I have to say, is absolutely Hilarious! Her body is shaved all the way down, but her head, haunches, tail and legs are still perfectly Stay-Puft. (I’ve been trying very hard not to laugh whenever I see her; instead petting the denuded portion and telling her she’s a pretty girl. Like that helps, but whatever …)
The weather is getting warmer in Atlanta, which means our thoughts turn to creative ways to stay cool. We all have our own favorite methods. Some of us like to chill out under the air conditioner. Others enjoy taking a ride on a motorcycle down a shady street. As for myself, I like to wage full-on water warfare.
