Jet lag! Not at all the subject of the podcast, but definitely one of the influences for this episode. Really it’s about spoilers. Who likes them? Who hates them? Who thinks they make everything better? Who thinks they RUIN EVERYTHING?

Spoiler alert: It turns out that people don’t really care about spoilers all that much.

I’ve made no bones about my adoration of the HBO series “Game of Thrones” here on the blog. I know I’m not the only one; after all, the series has averaged 2.5 million viewers since it premiered back in April. That said, my nascent obsession has created a little problem for a re-emerging bookworm like me: As I wrote on Twitter a few weeks ago, I’ve been torn between watching the television series completely unspoiled and devouring the “A Song of Ice and Fire” book series wholesale. The flood of book spoilers isn’t really helping.

Here’s a story I’ve heard a couple of times in my local fan community. A group of friends was in line to see “The Empire Strikes Back” on opening night. One of the group was reading … the novelization of “The Empire Strikes Back.” And, in a moment instantly burned into the minds of everyone around, the reader asked aloud …

After 5 seasons and 118 episodes, you’d think we’d be reasonably close to learning What It All Means on “Lost.” Of course, if you’ve been watching since the beginning, you also know that fans have pretty much gotten used to wearing their frustration like a badge of pride. With only 3 1/2 hours left before the series ends for good, however, what once felt like a delicious tease now feels a little bit like a long con. In other words, what on Earth is going on here?

We’re all familiar with the phenomenon of trailers that show off every great part of the movie they’re promoting, making the movie itself ultimately disappointing. “Meet the Robinsons” is a good example — the T. rex and its big head/little arms dilemma was the star of the show, and it was all over the previews. And then there are the trailers that just don’t capture the sense of the movie, which I hope is what’s going on in the ones I’ve seen for the forthcoming “The Road,” based on Cormac McCarthy’s Pulitzer-prize winning novel.

What I don’t see as often are the trailers that give everything away — like the newest one for “New Moon,” which debuted during MTV’s Video Music Awards. Barring major departures from the book, it more or less has the whole plot covered.

In response to yesterday’s Harry Potter post, commenter Karl said, “‘Spoilers’? How can there be spoilers if you have already read the books?” My response was that books are different from movies, and I don’t really want to know what changes the filmmakers have made until I’m watching the film. I wasn’t always anti-spoiler, though. Before any of Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” movies made it to the big screen, I collected every spoiler I could click.

But sometime after “The Fellowship of the Ring” premiered, I decided that carrying around all those jigsaw-puzzly bits of movie knowledge was distracting me when it came time to actually watch a film. I wound up being decidedly anti-spoiler. And it’s not just plot details that I’d rather not hear.
