The Colors of the Running of the Bulls
by Kathryn Whitbourne | February 6, 2012
Viewing our podcast of the Running of the Bulls, in Pamplona, Spain, you can’t help but notice the official uniform of the event: white pants, white T-shirt, red sash and red neckerchief. So that got me wondering if there was any significance to the outfit.

Hope you enjoyed our podcast on Montserrat in Spain. Escalonia de Montserrat has posted a nice video on Youtube showcasing the choir and some nice shots of the monastery. Enjoy:
Strange Souvenirs: Catalonia’s el Caganer
by Amanda Arnold | October 24, 2011
Let’s just say that Catalans are comfortable with poop.
If you ever visit the Catalonia region of Spain, you may find yourself face-to-face with a figurine called “el Caganer” — or “the great defecator.” He’s not exactly a religious figure. He’s more just a guy who’s pulled his pants down, squatted and right now is doing a No. 2. In front of you.
Constructing Human Towers in India
by Amanda Arnold | August 23, 2011
According to Hindu faith, when Lord Krishna was a little boy, he looooooved butter. (And can you blame him?) Unfortunately for Krishna, buttermilk was stored in clay pots that were hung high above the ground — out of a little tike’s reach. So, Krishna did what any kid with an intense food craving would do: He gathered a group of friends to build a human pyramid, and via this pyramid, Krishna climbed to his beloved butter.
Island Power: El Hierro and Renewable Energy
by Ben Bowlin | July 21, 2011
Often called “The Meridian Island,” El Hierro is the smallest of the Canary Islands. It’s a haven for diving enthusiasts, and it may soon become the first island powered entirely by renewable energy. At a first glance, this might not seem like a big deal. After all, El Hierro is only about 107 square miles [...]
I’m a little late to the party on this, but did you know there’s a newly blue village in Spain?
When Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation chose to premier its movie “The Smurfs” in Juzcar, Spain, they also decided to paint the adorable white village blue — Smurf blue. It took 12 painters and 4,000 liters of paint.
The property was slated to be a parking garage [sigh], but construction workers accidentally excavated something so much more delightful: Roman ruins [wahoo!].
So, the city of Seville, Spain, nixed the garage project and staged a grand design competition — for a structure that would shade and protect the ruins, as well as attract locals and tourists to a plaza in this somewhat down-and-out area of the city.
Well, this video is just lovely.
It was filmed by photographer Terje Sorgjerd April 4th through the 11th at the Canary Islands — on top of El Teide, Spain’s highest mountain. While Sorgjerd was there, a sandstorm hit, which probably wasn’t at all comfortable for him, but certainly made for some golden pictures …
As if, on the heels of a devastating earthquake-tsunami combo in Japan, we needed any more reminders of Mother Nature’s destructive power, researchers think they may have finally located a storied city she pummeled ages ago. Perhaps you’ve heard of it — it’s a little place called Atlantis, and according to a team of archeologists led by Connecticut-based professor Richard Freund, it’s sitting somewhere beneath the marshlands of the Dona Ana Park in southern Spain.
One of the best things about Spain is the napping. Am I right?
Actually, I’ve never been to Spain. Nevertheless, I was a bit sad to find out that in 2006, the Spanish government outlawed the workday siesta (eating, then lying down to catch an hour of zzzs) for its federal employees, and that it expected the private sector to follow suit.
