Mark Zuckerberg probably had no idea that the social media juggernaut he created would one day be the stage on which countless women’s gender-specific insecurity and anxiety would play out for researchers to pick apart and analyze.
In 2011 alone, Facebook research (in academic and non-academic settings) has concluded the following…

Governments around the world are looking at the Internet with a new perspective. While we’ve seen the Internet play a role in social activism before — the 2009 protests in Iran are a good example — the social upheaval taking place in the Middle East and surrounding regions show that the Internet can be a powerful tool both for instigation and organization. How can a government worried about maintaining control minimize the impact of social media?

When I started by Facebook account, I was freshly out of a relationship, so I filled in “single” in the relationship status field. A few minutes later, I decided I didn’t want any status whatsoever. So I removed it.
Then Facebook alerted my fledgling group of friends that “Cristen Conger is no longer single.”

I was reading this article about Digg’s demise… Last Call for Relevance: Why Digg May Never Find Its Way Back …and way at the bottom there is this fascinating tidbit: Most would be shocked to learn that some of Digg’s competitors actually pay people to generate interesting, witty, and intellectual comments. I met several incredible people at CES 2011. One such person is Brian Brushwood, stage magician and technology enthusiast. I had encountered Brian once before at Dragon*Con in 2010 but we didn’t have much of a chance to chat. At CES, we both guest hosted Tech News Today along with Ian Morris of CNET UK. I just learned about a project of Brian’s that promises to carry on his life, in a virtual sense, after he has shuffled off the mortal coil (in other words, after he dies).

For example, last week I read Paul Thomasch’s article in Reuters that Facebook’s revenue for last year…

Social networking site Facebook hosted a mobile event today. I followed along with Jessica Dolcourt, Josh Lowensohn and Caroline McCarthy, who hosted CNET’s live blog. I also tuned in to the live feed on FacebookLive.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg started off the event. Of the 500-million-plus members, apparently 200 million or so are using the site on a mobile platform. Zuckerberg discussed the iPhone and Android applications.

Leo LaPorte recently discovered that posts, which he thought were flowing automatically to Twitter, never made it there. And apparently no one noticed. Apparently he was deriving no traffic from Twitter, so there was no traffic effect. None of his fans seemed to notice either. Here is his account…

Social media sites help people stay connected with their friends, let them play games and provide an outlet for marketing their businesses. Twitter and Facebook aren’t just for the geeks among us, it seems like just about everyone’s got a profile of some kind — some people even have two or more. But there are other reasons to use social media sites, and Lockheed Martin wants to learn how people use social media in life-changing situations.
