Weather forecasting is a fickle business. Certain things can be predicted with fairly high accuracy with a week of lead time – Hurricanes are an example. If a hurricane forms, it’s subsequent behavior is fairly predictable although the exact landfall coordinates can be hard to pinpoint. But the 5-day or 10-day forecast that you see [...]
I saw this hilarious — yet potentially harrowing, had the situation been sped up — video on YouTube today, and it made me think people might appreciate a refresher on how to drive in snowy and icy conditions. So first of all: Slow down! Those two car lengths you’re (supposed to be) leaving between you and the vehicle in front of you at regular times? Make it at least three times that (or more!) when it’s snowy, unless you’re hungry for back-bumper-and-smash sandwich.
It has started getting cold at night. Last night it got down to 30 degrees F here at home. In December in North Carolina we often get into the teens. It rarely snows real snow in North Carolina. But at 15 or 20 degrees F it seems like you could use snow maker technology to [...]

Marshall Brain Answers…
I apologize for getting this blog post up late. Last Friday, Atlanta was hit by what some of us call the Snowpocalypse, but what anyone from the north would refer to as a “minor dusting” of the white stuff. Chris and I made it in to the office to record some new episodes but we both left early for fear of riots in the streets and a run on the local grocery stores for all the bread, milk and toilet paper. I never got around to writing up a podcast roundup as a result. Now, let’s move on to what we talked about!
Good question – How can you have fun if you have a lot of snow?
by Marshall Brain | February 9, 2010
There are parts of the United States that are inundated in snow right now. What can you do with it? Idea #1 – use the snow as a landing pad as you leap from the roof of a building. Understand that you need a lot of snow in a soft drift for this to work: [...]
Sapporo, Japan — 12,000 Snowmen Strong
by Amanda Arnold | January 8, 2010
It snowed here in Atlanta last night (y’all!). The “y’all” is plural for “you,” and the exclamation point is for how excited Southerners like me get about snowflakes. Anyway, in honor of snow appreciation, I’ve decided to blog about the Sapporo Snow Festival in Japan, which holds the world record for most snowmen assembled in one place at one time — 12,379. That’s what I said — 12,379 snow-people. A snow-crowd, if you will.
