Recently, on Stuff Mom Never Told You, Molly and I have covered the Western obsession with tanning and the Eastern custom of skin lightening. In both episodes, we focused largely on women since we’re stereotypically more attentive to our personal appearance and more willing to alter it via makeup, tanning, hair styling, etc. But in [...]
For the fifth and final installment of How-to Stuff’s Face (and Foot) Week ’09, I thought I’d focus on the eyes. People commonly think that dark under-eye circles are a sign of sleepless nights and partying too hard, but that isn’t the case. Dark under-eye circles are more a matter of genetics than lifestyle.
Folks who have problems with chronic under-eye circles can probably blame hereditary excess pigmentation. Because the skin below the eyes is thin, the pigment shines through more to create the appearance of bags. The Mayo Clinic says that allergies, eczema, congestion, sun exposure and aging can cause them, too. And certain medications, including birth control pills, can also bring out the bags.
Turns out, I’ve been doing it all wrong. Yes, I use cleanser and water and perform it twice a day, but the mechanics of proper face washing aren’t as no-brainer as you may think (just as Molly taught us last week with hand washing). Although the popular mantra for facial skin care holds that oil is bad, the real reasons we should wash are to remove dead skin cells, makeup, dirt and bacteria. Rinsing away those contaminants, along with excess surface oil, wards off blocked pores.
I spent the past weekend boating, floating and jet skiing around a lake in picturesque Kentucky. And while it was highly relaxing, a constant question nagged at me as I lolled about in the warm, waterfont sun. Had I applied enough waterproof SPF 45 sunscreen to ward off those vicious UV rays? Was I a sitting duck in water, just asking for a blistering burn?
Not wishing to ruin my getaway weekend by scorching my skin in the sun, I reapplied lotion like a maniac. And while I managed to dodge any significant sunburn, the experience made me wonder just how often you’re supposed to reapply.
