5 Questions for Stephen Torrence, ASL Singer & Jonathan Coulton Fan
by Tracy V. Wilson | September 1, 2009
This summer, a broken knee prompted me to spend a whole lot of time on the couch with my laptop. That’s how, one weekend morning while trying to alleviate my boredom with some Jonathan Coulton-inspired machinima, I stumbled across something delightful on YouTube. It was a sign language video of “First of May,” the NS-est of all potentially NSFW Jonathan Coulton songs.
But that wasn’t the most delightful part — the most delightful part was that there were more.
I caught up with Stephen Torrence, who created these videos, last week for a FanStuff interview. He reminds me of Charlie Ross of One Man Star Wars fame — both of them are smart, creative and funny, and they have more interesting things to say than I have room to print. So, I’m splitting my interview with Stephen up into two posts. Today’s post is the “why” part of my talk with Stephen, and tomorrow’s is the “how.”
Not too long ago, I was trying to figure out how a Tesla coil worked so I could write about it for Discovery Channel’s “Time Warp.” For a while, I was stumped, so I did what I’ve been doing for the last four years whenever I’ve failed at wrapping my brain around something. I IM‘ed my brother. In spite of what I used to tell him when we were kids, he is smarter than I am.
His response? “You should put the Tesla music in there.” I grew up during the ’80s, so it took me a minute to realize he didn’t mean the band behind the power ballad “Love Song.”
One year when I was in elementary school, I took part in a fundraiser called Jump Rope for Heart. A bunch of us got pledges from friends and family members, and then we all gathered in the gymnatorium for a marathon jump rope session. I think I raised maybe $250 for the American Heart Association, largely due to the generosity of my maternal grandmother.
Over the weekend, three guys in Indiana seriously trumped my pathetic grade-school jump-rope effort by raising more than $24,000 (so far) during a multiday Mario marathon. Three players, Brian “Shirt Guy” Brinegar, John “Couch Guy” Groth, and Chris “Slouch Guy” Deckard, started playing at 9:00 a.m. EDT on July 10. The goal: To play through all the Mario titles, stream their shenanigans over the Web, and raise money for charity.
This weekend, some member-friends were kind enough to take me to the Center for Puppetry Arts’ “Labyrinth” sing-along with Heather Henson. I think everyone in our party had the same low-key expectations. We’d arrive, sit down with some excited kids and equally excited grown-up fans, watch the movie, and sing along when songs were happening.
We knew we’d missed the mark when we arrived and got to pick up a collection of treats meant to be thrown, shaken, shot, exploded and eaten. Heather Henson and puppeteer/improviser Lucky Yates acted out the roles of Sarah and Jareth (and Jareth’s pants) in front of the screen, with a small set and props. There were also puppets, balloons, fog machines, bubbles and ad-libs from the audience.
When a former HowStuffWorks-er told me about Twitter back in 2006, I was a vehement naysayer. I absolutely did not want one more way to keep in touch with people (or to have them keep in touch with me). The more people told me how great Twitter was, the more I dug in my heels. By the time it seemed like everyone on Earth had joined Twitter, I was dead-set on being obstinate.
But last week I saw Jonathan Strickland work some crazy Twitter magic and decided to give it a shot. I feel a little like I’m walking around with my freshly bought copy of a well-loved sci-fi classic that has “Now a Major Motion Picture!” emblazoned on the cover. But in spite of that, I’m glad I joined, mostly because I got to watch the magic of #ihate5e unfold yesterday afternoon.
One of the things on my to-do list this weekend is seeing Jonathan Coulton and Paul and Storm at Atlanta’s Variety Playhouse on Saturday. My introduction to JoCo was that “Code Monkey”/”World of Warcraft” machinima that made the rounds a few years back. I was hooked … but it’s not just the music. Here are my top 5 awesome things about JoCo.
