Anyone who has ever played “Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots” knows that artificially intelligent machines exist to punch the bejesus out of each other for our viewing enjoyment.

Really, what other uses would we have for one of humanity’s greatest scientific accomplishments? Sure, saving lives and cleaning up nuclear disaster zones is great, but how are we supposed to bet on that?

First, let’s look at a few examples from our sci-fi pop culture. Up first? The trailer for the upcoming film “Real Steel,” which apparently features Hugh Jackman, Kate from “Lost” and Liz Lemon’s dentist in supporting roles opposite a bunch of punching machines.

Several bits of cool space music entered the atmosphere this week. For starters, Fortean Times has a fantastic interview with British electronic music pioneer Gary Numan, famous for such hits as “Cars” and “Are ‘friends’ electric?” Mighty Boosh fans may also remember that he also has a pilot license. At any rate, the FT interview is loaded with cool insight into Numan’s early sci-fi influences, his fascination with alien abduction experiences and how Asperser Syndrome has affected his work.

Trekmovie.com reported yesterday that jewelry manufacturer Genki Wear is releasing three Star Trek colognes and perfumes based on the original TV series. Genki Wear is known for selling officially licensed sci-fi replica jewelry — think “Buffy” necklaces and the like. The scent venture is no doubt an attempt to capitalize on press generated by the soon-to-be released Trek “prequel” from director J.J. Abrams.

The fragrances are named for various facets of the Trek universe — “Tiberius” “Red Shirt” and “Ponn Farr.” Genki Wear calls the Tiberius scent “difficult to define” which sounds like a great marketing tag if you ask me. Red Shirt is named for the countless Enterprise crew members that were introduced only to quickly be killed away. (Apparently they were known for wearing red shirts.) Ponn Farr is named for a “Vulcan mating ritual” — another great tag.
