I saw this hilarious — yet potentially harrowing, had the situation been sped up — video on YouTube today, and it made me think people might appreciate a refresher on how to drive in snowy and icy conditions. So first of all: Slow down! Those two car lengths you’re (supposed to be) leaving between you and the vehicle in front of you at regular times? Make it at least three times that (or more!) when it’s snowy, unless you’re hungry for back-bumper-and-smash sandwich.
A story out of France this week makes this safety tip an important consideration. Buildings need to have awnings in order to save lives. Just look at this example: Paris girl ‘survives six-storey fall unharmed’ French media are describing as a “miracle” the unscathed survival of an 18-month-old girl who fell from a sixth-floor apartment. [...]
Invention – Behold, the robot lifeguard, 6 times faster than a human
by Marshall Brain | October 27, 2010
The robot lifeguard has arrived, and may be better than human lifeguards in some situations: A robot lifeguard patrols Malibu The final result is a remote-controlled contraption powered by a tiny electric pump called an impeller, which squirts a forceful stream of water, much like the propulsion system on a Jet Ski. Manufactured by Mulligan’s [...]
While I’m sure that we’ve talked about cruise control in the past, I thought we’d take just a few moments today to talk about a recent (but not necessarily new) variation of that original system — Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC). And since it’s not all-new technology, I’ll just give you a quick description of how the system works…
He stares at you intently from across the dimly lit bar, and a few minutes later, he slowly makes his way toward you. He noticed you were alone, he says, and that you had a lonely look about you. As he asks if he can join you and try to cheer you up, a charming smile lights up his face. You two hit it off, and make plans to meet that weekend. And for a few months, everything’s great. You take an impromptu road trip together, you go for spontaneous walks in the rain, it’s all so exciting!
Then things take a bizarre turn. The sweet engaging man you fell for starts to tear apart at the seams … What’s going on here?!
Asphalt is one of those things, like water and electricity, that no American could live without. Most American roads (96%) are paved in asphalt, meaning that our commutes and our shopping trips depend on the stuff. Everything we buy at the store comes in via truck on those same roads, so without asphalt there would be nothing to buy. Millions of tons of asphalt are made and laid every year in the U.S. Yet we tend take asphalt completely for granted. Let’s take a look at how this essential material works…
This is a fascinating video because the thinking is so outside the box. It could potentially provide so many advantages in terms of power generation, power and broadband distribution, smart roads and safety… Imagine having roads like that in your community. The streets running through your neighborhood provide the power for the neighborhood and bring it to your door along with your broadband connection….
If it ever comes to the point where we can buy one, the T.25 City Car could change transportation in the same kind of way that the Tata Nano does. The T.25 City Car is a tiny, 74 MPG, 3-passenger, $10,000-ish car that you can see in this video…
If you watch the following video, you are going to see half a dozen motorcycle riders crash at high speed, and then stand up and walk away without injury. But how can you fall at 100 MPH and walk away? It all depends on what you are wearing at the time…
One of the kids heard about toxoplasmosis yesterday and was asking about it. It is a pretty startling parasite the first time you hear about it, because it gets into your brain. In rats, it actually modifies behavior and causes them to seek cats. But it also affects people. We hunted around and found this [...]
