As I was driving home Wednesday I was listening to Marketplace and heard about this new gadget developed by Philips Design and the Dialogues Incubator, a subsidiary of ABN AMRO, which is a bank in the Netherlands.

It’s called the Rationalizer, and the press release said that the device works as an “emotion mirror” for people who are at home doing serious stock trading. Fear and greed are the two driving factors that motivate trades, the press release said. Enter the Rationalizer, which is supposed to tell you when it thinks you’re going to make a trade based on fear or greed, so you can rethink your actions.

There are two parts to the system. One of them, the EmoBracelet, you wear on your wrist. The other is the EmoBowl, which sits near the person making the stock trades. Sensors in the EmoBracelet attempt to detect the trader’s emotions based on galvanic skin response.

Lots of stuff going on today, so here are some highlights:

Nintendo dropped the price of the Wii to $199 in the United States. John P. Falcone wrote in CNET’s Crave blog about the change, which comes hot on the heels of Sony’s cut in the Playstation 3′s price to $299, and a little farther back, Microsoft’s cut in the 120GB hard drive version of the Xbox 360. I’m guessing that will help push the three consoles through the holiday season, but I’m also thinking sales will remain slow, based on what I’ve heard.

Andrew Nusca wrote at ZDNet that Microsoft‘s acquisition of Danger has yielded two Sharp-manufactured phones, the Turtle and the Pure. These are part of the so-called Pink Project. The pictures look a little like Danger’s Sidekick devices. A few days ago, Mary Jo Foley at ZDNet said Pink Project phones will use a version of Windows Mobile 7 and will be able to use the Zune music store.

I’d like to take a moment to wish our good friend the compact disc a happy birthday. Sadly, its birthday was actually the 8th, but I sent it some flowers, so hopefully it will forgive me.
Last Friday, the IEEE (once an acronym for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc., but now it’s just IEEE) granted Royal Philips Electronics an IEEE Milestone Award for contributing to the creation of the CD. Yesterday was the 30th anniversary of the first demonstration of the CD prototype, which was codenamed “Pinkeltje.” Frankly, I’m glad they ditched that name in favor of “compact disc.”
Since Sony and Philips launched CD players in 1982, more than 3.5 billion CD audio players have been sold, as well as another 3 billion CD-ROM drives and 240 billion compact discs themselves.
