Once in a while, I stumble across a story so remarkably absurd that I question whether or not I’m awake. Today, I saw such a story. Forbes blogger David M. Ewalt wrote about how the organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has criticized Nintendo and the Mario series for animal cruelty. It all stems from an item you can find in several Mario games called the Tanooki Suit. This is a costume of a raccoon-like animal that gives Mario limited flying abilities.

It’s always an adventure clicking on CNN.com or whatever your go-to online news source happens to be. Each morning I awake ready to see a list of the top ten or so things that are pretty awful here on planet E. Famine and flood, earthquakes, murder/suicides, the passing of Daddy the pit bull — it’s never a joy ride when international news is there for the digesting.

This afternoon I clicked on said Web site to read a headline that indicated a killer whale had killed a Sea World trainer in Orlando, Fla.

In the wake of football mascot Uga VII’s death, PETA is demanding that the University of Georgia turn to costumed mascots or, yes, robot dogs instead of subjecting a poorly bred English bulldog to hot, humid games. What say you, football fans, robots and animal lovers?
