Senator Al Franken of Minnesota called on his dramatic roots recently when he stepped into the halls of the Senate Judiciary Committee and read the 4th amendment to David Kris, assistant attorney general of the Justice Department’s National Security Division. Seems that counsel was there to testify to the committee that certain provisions of the controversial Patriot Act be renewed — like wedding vows, but with wiretaps.

I have a thing for novels set in a dystopian future. Whether it’s Orwell’s “1984,” Huxley’s “Brave New World” or “A Clockwork Orange” by Anthony Burgess, I just can’t get enough stories about a world in which the government has overstepped its bounds.

I would prefer those worlds to stay within the realm of fiction.
