Heart disease is the #1 killer in the United States. According to the CDC, Heart disease kills 616,000 people per year, or about 1,600 per day. So, if you don’t want to die young, it seems like it would be a smart thing to do take whatever steps you can to prevent heart disease. Now [...]
How to do proper crunches to (theoretically) get six-pack abs
by Marshall Brain | October 1, 2010
Is it possible for a normal person who isn’t a teenager or a 20-something to have six-pack abs? Obviously it is possible for some people, because Sylvester Stallone has amazing abs. But Stallone wouldn’t really fall into the “normal” category. Even Mike Sorrentino of Jersey Shore, who has perhaps the most famous set of abs today, makes it sound a little like rocket science…
This documentary covers how your body clocks work, how we discovered them, how they affect behavior and health, etc. For example, medicines taken at the right time are more effective. By changing the time you exercise, you can get more benefits. And so on. Really interesting…
How does your appearance change when you become obese?
by Marshall Brain | September 16, 2010
Here are before and after photos of five people who started thin and became obese. The change in appearance is unexpected (almost unrecognizable). The health effects are not good either…
Why America is obese #3 – Pancakes and sausage on a stick
by Marshall Brain | September 15, 2010
I saw this ad over the weekend in Parade magazine. The tag line is, “New Jimmy D’s helps your kids reach their full potential. Made with Turkey sausage, it’s a great way to start their day right.” In fact, it appears to be the opposite…
So we bring it home and Irena wants to have it for dinner. Leigh cooks her a can, and as Irena is eating it she says to me, “Oh, this is soooo good – try it.” I eat a spoonful, and she is right. It is excellent. But it is a little too excellent, as in, “this is not your normal chili”. Prior to this experience, I would have considered chili to be a relatively healthy food. Normal contains a lot of meat and a lot of beans in a sauce. But like I said, this chili was a little too tasty…
Today I am reporting on my fourteenth week (days 95 through 102) on the Dukan diet. This week we learned that Drew Carey lost an amazing 80 pounds on a no-carb diet and now looks completely different as a result:
Drew Carey loses 80 pounds with a no-carb diet
He says he started in January, so January-through-July (7 months) he lost 11.4 pounds per month (let’s call it 2.6 pounds per week), which is outstanding. A masterful display of discipline. Drew Carey is apparently much better at weight loss than I am, because this week I only lost 0.4 pounds. It seems like I have hit an impenetrable barrier when it comes to breaking into the 180s. Which is silly of course, but the 180s have eluded me for several weeks now. Here is how the week unfolded…
This documentary on weight loss opens with this thought:
Every day we are bombarded with advice about new super diets and the latest slimming fads – advice on foods that are supposed to help us shed pounds. And advice on which foods are loaded with calories. And yet losing weight continues to be one of the hardest things we ever attempt. Each year millions of us try to slim down, and fail. So what does work? We’re sticking to the science.
It is a fascinating journey that boils down to 10 things You Need to Know About Losing Weight, all backed up by science…
Since starting the Dukan Diet, I have received a great deal of advice in the comments as well as in person and over the phone. Apparently there is a lot of interest in diets and dieting, and there is a great deal of conventional wisdom around them.
The funny thing about the Dukan diet is that there is a perception of danger. Almost all of the unsolicited advice I have received has been negative, but at least in my personal experience with the Dukan diet, it has been wrong. You should consult your doctor before starting any weight loss program, and your mileage may vary, and if you have problems or concerns you would be well-advised to stop any diet you are trying, but I thought I would address some of the things I have heard and compare them to my reality…
