Salad Days for the Mail-Order Bride Business
by Cristen Conger | February 28, 2011
Long ago on Stuff Mom Never Told You, Molly and I discussed whether mail-order brides still exist. The short answer is yes, services matching men with international women (often from Eastern Europe) certainly still exist. And according to a recent BusinessWeek story, the mail-order bride business has benefited from the recession.
Japan’s Legal Battle for Maiden Names
by Cristen Conger | February 15, 2011
A Valentine’s Day lawsuit filed in Japan challenges an 1898 civil law maintaining that women have to give up their maiden names when they wed. Four married Japanese women and one of their husband’s brought the lawsuit, which the Sydney Morning Herald (via Jezebel) described as a “test for the rights of women, who continue to struggle against gender stereotypes and remain under-represented in politics and corporate boardrooms.”
His name is Zach Wahls. He is a 19-year-old student at the University of Iowa. He, according to the video description, speaks “about the strength of his family during a public forum on House Joint Resolution 6 in the Iowa House of Representatives. Wahls has two mothers, and came to oppose House Joint Resolution 6 [...]
Many, many episodes ago on Stuff Mom Never Told You, I jokingly commented to Molly that we should abolish marriage. We had been discussing the legal differences between civil unions and marriages, and after dissecting the legalese ad nauseum, I mentioned that maybe we should just do away with the whole thing. Let folks couple up as they will, and call it a day.
Prince William’s Engagement Ring Means He’s in It to Win It
by Cristen Conger | November 17, 2010
Prior to popping the question, Prince William says he carried around Kate Middleton’s engagement ring for weeks — in his royal rucksack, no less — while the couple vacationed in Africa. The Prince was probably sweating bullets every time he reached in that rucksack because if he misplaced the bauble, there’d be no replacing it. He surprised his princess-to-be with the same sapphire and diamond ring his father presented to Princess Di when he proposed.
A while back on Stuff Mom Never Told You, Molly and I took on the question of whether a female equivalent to ‘bachelor’ existed. The word ‘bachelor’ conjures up images of suave George Clooney, the handsome, unmarried man who simply can’t be confined to the embrace of just one woman. What about pop culture’s consummate [...]
In 2010 there have been several memorable stories where people have expressed their dissatisfaction with their situations. There is the example seen in Tony Hayward’s statement that he’d “like his life back” after his company ruined the lives and livelihoods of millions of people and animals with a massive oil spill. There is the situation [...]
Thanks to listener Christine for sending Molly and me a copy of the Hong Kong government’s work visa form she recently filled out. The marital status choices are married, divorced, widowed, separated or….bachelor/spinster.
Assuming they want to be together ‘til death do they part, men who marry younger women live longer. Statistically, if he weds someone seven to nine years his junior, he has an 11 percent lower mortality risk.
Now, a study of more than 2 million Danish couples has uncovered another compelling correlation between spousal age and longevity.
How online dating sites like eHarmony and Match.com don’t work
by Marshall Brain | April 20, 2010
The OKCupid Blog can have some really interesting articles – the statistical analysis often reveals things you would never imagine. For example, the whole idea of statistically analysing profile photos to determine whether or not you should look at the camera and whether or not you should smile was fascinating: How to (scientifically) create the [...]
