I know I’m a little late, but I’ve finally caught up on the first season of “The Walking Dead” and it’s safe to say that I’m obsessed. I’ve had to watch multiple scenes through my fingers, the plot makes no sense and the explosion at the CDC may have been the funniest thing I’ve seen on screen all year, but I’ve loved every minute of this show so far. Except for a worrying number of moments that have actually made me question the intelligence of the characters.
Naturally, there are spoilers for the season finale of “Lost” in this post.
I’ve said before that the moment I quit loving “Lost” was when I saw Dr. Pierre Chang/Dr. Marvin Candle broadly exclaim that the energy the DHARMA initiative is tapping into might allow them to travel through time. The erratic time jumps that followed in season 5 really sealed the deal — they seemed formulated to confuse viewers and string them along instead of advancing the story.
It turns out the joke’s on me.
After 5 seasons and 118 episodes, you’d think we’d be reasonably close to learning What It All Means on “Lost.” Of course, if you’ve been watching since the beginning, you also know that fans have pretty much gotten used to wearing their frustration like a badge of pride. With only 3 1/2 hours left before the series ends for good, however, what once felt like a delicious tease now feels a little bit like a long con. In other words, what on Earth is going on here?
I used to love “Lost.” In its first couple of seasons, I couldn’t get enough of lostaways, tailies, the DHARMA Initiative and all manner of fan theories. Every week, I waited for serendipitous flashback encounters and unexpected plot turnabouts with bated breath.
Now it’s like I’ve seen the strings and suddenly realized I’m at a puppet show. Not that there’s anything wrong with puppets … I just thought I was watching people.
Last night, as I was still trying to make heads or tails of the “Lost” season premiere, I sat down to watch the latest installment of another J.J. Abrams creation, the sophomore Fox hit “Fringe.” The series deals with a variety of strange phenomena, but none stranger than the idea of an alternate universe identical to our own — one in which the Twin Towers remain standing, but the White House lies in ruins after Sept. 11. In last night’s episode, the two worlds nearly collided, with deadly results.
