Online retailer Amazon.com is in negotiations with publishers to create a digital library service for customers of its Amazon Prime service, according to Stu Woo and Jeffrey A. Trachtenberg of The Wall Street Journal. The authors compared the service to the movie-rental and video-streaming service Netflix, where people would be able to access electronic books as part of the $79-per-year service that includes unlimited two-day shipping and streaming video.

Just a few days ago, Melissa J. Perenson of PC World covered Amazon’s most recent earnings announcement. The company said in the last quarter it sold 115 electronic books for its Kindle device for every 100 paperback books sold. In addition, Kindle books outsold hardcover books as well — though those sales numbers include titles for which there’s no Kindle edition.

The Kindle’s display is great because it is so energy efficient, but it is fairly small, slow to update and it is only black and white. There’s a lot going on in tech news this week. Among the items I thought interesting include a report in The Wall Street Journal that Google is looking to introduce its own social networking service. I mean besides Orkut, Friend Connect and Buzz. Amir Efrati wrote that Google has been talking to social gaming giants Playfish, Playdom and Zynga about the possibility of bringing their wares to a Google-based service.

It’s been quite the year for rumors about Apple. There were rumors that Steve Jobs would step down (he didn’t). There were rumors that the new iPod Touch would have a camera (it doesn’t). And then there are the rumors surrounding the mythical Apple tablet device.

Over at TechStuff, we’ve been chasing these rumors all year long. The most prolific source of information has been Apple’s supply chain. Most of what we know about this device comes from information gleaned from the companies that supply the tablet’s parts. But much of the tablet remains a mystery. We aren’t sure what kind of operating system it will use. We don’t even know how Apple will market it.

That may soon change. John Paczkowski of All Things Digital reports that, according to an industry analyst, Apple is seeking partnerships with book publishers for content distribution. This could put the tablet in the same general competitive space as the Kindle and Nook. Could the Tablet simply be an Apple-branded e-reader device?

There’s been a lot of talk in the news media about e-books lately, and it’s obvious that electronics manufacturers believe the public is finally coming around to the idea of electronic readers.
