A group out of King’s College, London undertook the gruesome task of poring over nearly 100,000 violent deaths of Iraqi civilians between 2003 and 2008, the time when war-torn Iraq was at its most war-torn. The researchers used data obtained by the British non-governmental organization Iraq Body County and created what they called a Dirty War Index.

A Forward Operating Base or FOB is a military installation designed to house military troops close to a front.

This article points out that FOBs have a positive effect on the lives of soldiers, relatively speaking:

How the Forward Operating Base is changing the life of combat soldiers

The situation in post war Iraq is producing combat veterans accustomed to a perspective of combat that differs greatly from past wars. The Forward Operating Base (FOB) has become a mainstay of the U.S. presence in Iraq. Dr. Leonard Wong and Colonel Stephan Gerras explore the facets of fighting from the FOB and show that it gives soldiers the unprecedented advantage of gaining a respite from constant danger, minimizes the wearing effects of hunger and fatique and reduces the isolation of combat

A new U.N. report reveals some disturbing news about a site of archaeological significance — the U.S. military did some rather extensive damage to Babylon when it was used as a base in Iraq in 2003 and 2004.

Babylon was one of the first civilizations on Earth, and a very cultured one at that. The Code of Hammurabi, the famous ancient code of law, originated in Babylon, although it’s now in the Louvre. And the city-state gave us one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World as well — the Hanging Gardens of Babylon (under the rule of Nebuchadnezzar, whose name I greatly enjoy saying).

The Ishtar Gate is one of the more well-known landmarks of Babylon. Adorned with glazed tiles and decorated with lions, dragons and wild oxen, the gate was dedicated to the goddess of the same name. The actual ruins of this site, a great archaeological discovery, are in a Berlin museum, so you can see the plundering started before ’03.
