Roughly one in every 10,000 individuals over age 65 can hear the hallucinatory music. Maybe it’s an old favorite or a folk tune they grew up with, but the brain finds a way to dig it up and re-broadcast it for an audience of one. In the latest episode of the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast, Julie and I run through the causes and treatment for this bizarre condition.

This morning, I read a post written by Charlie White at Mashable that suggests Apple’s troubles at the executive level could potentially intensify. White cites articles from a couple of British newspapers that say Jonathan Ive, the head of industrial design at Apple, may not be entirely happy with his situation. If Ive were to leave Apple, it could be a big blow.

If you have ever tried to use an iPod (or other MP3 player) while running, you know that the UI presents a problem. You usually have to stop to push the tiny buttons. What if you could put big buttons on your skin, and tap them to control the device? Inventors have explored this idea [...]

Today was Apple’s big music event, and rumors were flying beforehand. Would there be a new tablet? Would co-founder and current CEO Steve Jobs show up following his successful liver transplant? Since the Beatles Rock Band and the remastered CDs were coming out, would the trifecta become complete with the Beatles’ catalog finally coming to iTunes?

I think I may need to write a generic blog post that I can run every month or so about the rumored Apple tablet. Looking back at the blog archives, I see that I’ve written posts in March, April and May relating to the long-rumored device. I’ll just include some sort of easily-replaceable timely statement that I can switch out each month and keep the rest the same. Let’s give it a shot.

So, how about that Sarah Palin stepping down as Alaska’s governor? How crazy is that?

Now that we have the obligatory timely remark out of the way, we can move on to more rumors. On Friday, Kasper Jade of AppleInsider published a story about the Apple tablet device. According to Jade, the new gadget will hit the consumer market in early 2010.

Rumors of the tablet began to surface a couple of years ago. Some compare the tablet to the Newton, Apple’s PDA that has a somewhat tarnished reputation. Others call it a larger version of the iPod Touch or a Wacom tablet combined with a modestly-powered computer. A few say that the tablet is Apple’s answer to the netbook craze.

Yesterday, Apple sent out an iTunes update. I know that doesn’t sound very special — it seems like we get an iTunes update every other week. But this time the massive update (seriously, the updates for iTunes are in the 70-80 megabyte range) may upset Palm Pre owners. The new update disables the Pre’s ability to sync with iTunes.

Previously, the Pre fooled iTunes into thinking it was an iPod. You could transfer music and video from iTunes to the Pre just as you could with an Apple device. It would even sync with the latest content in your iTunes account. But according to this report from Rachel Metz, Apple’s new update removes that feature. It recognizes the Pre for what it really is — something other than an Apple device.

The Apple Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) begins Monday — because E3′s over, and what would we do without another trade show?

OK, jokes aside, lots of people are making predictions for the show, which as you might assume by its name is more for developers than it is for the consumer. Nonetheless, there are likely to be some announcements that appeal to you if you’re an Apple fan, especially if you’re wanting to hear about the newest version of the operating system for Macintosh computers and the iPhone/iPod Touch.

While news reports suggest that CEO Steve Jobs is feeling better these days (he’s been on medical leave since earlier this year and is supposed to return this month sometime), Seb Janacek at ZDNet believes Jobs won’t address the crowd at WWDC. He also said there won’t be a Mac tablet computer announced. However, Janacek said he does believe that Apple executives will discuss new features for Mac OS 10.6.

I love a good post-apocalyptic tale, regardless of artistic integrity. I grew up watching “Thundarr the Barbarian” and “The Road Warrior,” and while I eventually moved on to admire the likes of “The Road” and Jack Vance’s “Tales of the Dying Earth,” I’d probably still enjoy a viewing of “Cherry 2000.”

So the other day I checked out science-fiction blog i09 to read the latest on Denzel Washington’s upcoming post-apocalyptic romp “Book of Eli.” What did I find? News that the movie would feature Denzel wandering the wastes in search of a place to charge up his iPod.

I discussed just such a scenario in the article last summer in the article “Can you power an iPod with an onion?” so I’m thrilled to see this perplexing quandary make its way to the big screen.

Yesterday, Microsoft announced that it would introduce a new Zune mp3 device this fall called the Zune HD. The new Zune will feature an OLED multi-touch screen and an HD Radio receiver. It will also have WiFi capability and an Internet browser. Zune HD owners will be able to access the Zune Marketplace wirelessly and purchase music directly from the service.
