Recently, we at HowStuffWorks.com launched a new iPhone and iPod Touch app. The app is pretty cool — you can listen to podcasts, read blog posts, check out articles and even follow what’s going on with us on Facebook and Twitter. It collects all the HowStuffWorks.com material into a single point of access, something we’ve never had before. We’re pretty excited about it.

Steve Jobs unveiled Apple’s updated iPod line yesterday. Chris and I watched the presentation on Chris’s iPad. It was the first time Apple pushed a live stream of a big company announcement in a long time. The only catch was you had to view it on an Apple device or through Safari on a Mac running Snow Leopard. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised — Jobs has a well-earned reputation for doing things his own way. In fact, the only part of the presentation that did surprise me was that Jobs wasn’t wearing a turtleneck.

This week’s episodes of TechStuff were about making cash and breaking out of jail. Sort of. On Monday, Chris and I talked about the technology the United States uses to create coins and paper currency. Making a coin requires lots of steps from creating the initial design to stamping it on a disc of metal. Chris and I talk you through the process. Along the way, we revel in some of the great terms used in the minting industry. I still want to take a spin on a whirlaway.

Today Apple held a media event on its campus in Cupertino, Calif., at which the newest version of the operating system that powers the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad was announced. Developers got access to kits today and the new OS will be available this summer for iPhone and iPod users, this fall for iPad-o-philes.

Why would a person spend $1,000 for an Apple laptop when he or she can get more features for $500 by buying a laptop from HP, Dell, Asus, etc? To an Apple loyalist, I imagine this is a silly question. But to anyone else, it makes little sense. Case in point is the iPad, as [...]

Mobile devices aren’t usually the first targets you might think of when it comes to viruses, worms and Trojans. In fact, you could probably be forgiven for not knowing they exist at all. But I think that the recent popularity of smart phones with the consumer market may bring with it an interest in programming malware for those devices, as well.

And for a hacker who wants to make his or her mark on the consumer smart phone world, what better place to start than with the little machine that helped start the whole craze? Though certainly not the first smart phone, Apple’s iPhone was arguably the first smart phone that people found a reason to embrace for their personal use. And it’s sold millions for Apple.

Chet Wisniewski of security provider Sophos posted Saturday about a new worm that affects the iPhone. An Internet service provider in the Netherlands identified the malware.

Yesterday, Microsoft’s new MP3 player hit store shelves. It’s an update to their line of Zune products and it’s called the Zune HD. The player’s vibrant OLED touchscreen interface catches the eye right away. It readily responds to touch commands and the video quality is impressive. But beyond this first impression, what else is there?

Today was Apple’s big music event, and rumors were flying beforehand. Would there be a new tablet? Would co-founder and current CEO Steve Jobs show up following his successful liver transplant? Since the Beatles Rock Band and the remastered CDs were coming out, would the trifecta become complete with the Beatles’ catalog finally coming to iTunes?

I think I may need to write a generic blog post that I can run every month or so about the rumored Apple tablet. Looking back at the blog archives, I see that I’ve written posts in March, April and May relating to the long-rumored device. I’ll just include some sort of easily-replaceable timely statement that I can switch out each month and keep the rest the same. Let’s give it a shot.

So, how about that Sarah Palin stepping down as Alaska’s governor? How crazy is that?

Now that we have the obligatory timely remark out of the way, we can move on to more rumors. On Friday, Kasper Jade of AppleInsider published a story about the Apple tablet device. According to Jade, the new gadget will hit the consumer market in early 2010.

Rumors of the tablet began to surface a couple of years ago. Some compare the tablet to the Newton, Apple’s PDA that has a somewhat tarnished reputation. Others call it a larger version of the iPod Touch or a Wacom tablet combined with a modestly-powered computer. A few say that the tablet is Apple’s answer to the netbook craze.

The Apple Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) begins Monday — because E3′s over, and what would we do without another trade show?

OK, jokes aside, lots of people are making predictions for the show, which as you might assume by its name is more for developers than it is for the consumer. Nonetheless, there are likely to be some announcements that appeal to you if you’re an Apple fan, especially if you’re wanting to hear about the newest version of the operating system for Macintosh computers and the iPhone/iPod Touch.

While news reports suggest that CEO Steve Jobs is feeling better these days (he’s been on medical leave since earlier this year and is supposed to return this month sometime), Seb Janacek at ZDNet believes Jobs won’t address the crowd at WWDC. He also said there won’t be a Mac tablet computer announced. However, Janacek said he does believe that Apple executives will discuss new features for Mac OS 10.6.
