Apple is promoting its new AirPlay feature in iOS 4.2. You need to buy an Apple TV box to do this, but assuming you do that then it gives you an easy way to do three things: If you have a video on your iPad/iPhone/Touch, you can instantly watch it on your HDTV If you [...]
STD Testing? There’s an app for that.
by Cristen Conger | November 10, 2010
Smartphone apps are getting really personal these days. As in, down there personal. First came the PMS Buddy to help dudes track their girlfriends’ periods, and just this week, Betty Crocker released a menstrual calendar app that will send guys coupons for brownies to temper girlfriends’ PMS symptoms (because everyone knows that chocolate is better than Klonopin for tranquilizing hormone-crazed women). But the eSTI2 project from the University of the London may very well take the cake.
There are now three flavors of 4G in the U.S. – WiMax, HSPA+ and LTE

Sprint claimed the title of the “first 4G network” in the U.S. when it deployed it HTC Evo 4G phone on its WiMax network earlier in 2010: Is this the ultimate smartphone today? A look at the HTC EVO 4G Sprint has WiMax in about 30 cities. According to this page, WiMax offers 3 – [...]
Microsoft Refocuses on Smartphones with Windows Phone 7
by Jonathan Strickland | October 11, 2010
Earlier today, Microsoft held a press conference in which Steve Ballmer announced the new Windows Phone 7 platform for smartphones (I missed the announcement but CNET’s Caroline McCarthy has a great writeup). The new OS marks a new direction — previously, Microsoft’s Windows Mobile OS had been the company’s contribution to cell phone technology. But Windows Mobile hasn’t stacked up well against other smartphone operating systems: StatCounter doesn’t even break out Windows Mobile in its charts on mobile operating system market share.
Steve Jobs unveiled Apple’s updated iPod line yesterday. Chris and I watched the presentation on Chris’s iPad. It was the first time Apple pushed a live stream of a big company announcement in a long time. The only catch was you had to view it on an Apple device or through Safari on a Mac running Snow Leopard. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised — Jobs has a well-earned reputation for doing things his own way. In fact, the only part of the presentation that did surprise me was that Jobs wasn’t wearing a turtleneck.
Making Money And Breaking Out Of Jail The TechStuff Way
by Jonathan Strickland | August 13, 2010
This week’s episodes of TechStuff were about making cash and breaking out of jail. Sort of. On Monday, Chris and I talked about the technology the United States uses to create coins and paper currency. Making a coin requires lots of steps from creating the initial design to stamping it on a disc of metal. Chris and I talk you through the process. Along the way, we revel in some of the great terms used in the minting industry. I still want to take a spin on a whirlaway.
Jailbreaking is a way of hacking an iPhone, iPad or other iDevice that allows the user to access third-party apps. Chris and Jonathan explain how jailbreaking works in this episode.
Usually by August, the tech news well looks a little dry. This year seems to be an exception. Rumors about Apple’s iPhone migrating to Verizon in the United States continue to spread across the Web. According to unnamed sources “close to Apple’s hardware suppliers,” the company has ordered CDMA chips. That’s the cellular technology Verizon uses (Sprint also uses CDMA technology). We could see an iPhone on Verizon as early as January. I’d like to point out we’ve heard similar rumors — or perhaps just wishful thinking — about the iPhone going elsewhere before. We’ll have to wait and see if this time it’s true.
Overall, the Apple iPhone 4 release has been… odd. I guess if you are a fan of the “any PR is good PR” school of thought, it has been brilliant. But ask Tiger Woods or Lindsay Lohan how well that school of thought works out in reality, and you would probably get mixed reviews. The kind of debacle seen with the iPhone 4 is also very rare for Apple.
Therefore, given the rarity of Apple PR disasters, let’s recap this one and save it for posterity. In theory, we will never see anything like this again.
First there was “the leak”…
The following video introduces a term – “conflict minerals” – that you may have never heard of before. It is an important term because, behind the scenes, conflict minerals are leading to death and destruction for millions of people….
