The weird thing about scuba diving at Silfra in Iceland is that the water’s so clear, in some places you can’t tell which way is up and which way is down. There’s no murkiness to indicate depth. In fact, the water’s so clear, it’s more like air. Or perhaps no air. You might as well be floating around in outer space, according to DIVE magazine.

You’re not floating around space at all, though. You’re floating around a crack in the Earth’s surface.

Unless you’ve been making like an extremophile and hiding at the bottom of a volcano lately, you would have been hard-pressed not to learn a little bit about the Eyjafjallajökull eruption this month. It’s continuing to raise a ruckus, according to the Iceland Meteorological Office. The agency reports that booming sounds were heard in Hvolsvöllur, which is about 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of the eruption site, this week.

Surprisingly though, the impressive geological phenomena had very little impact on public health, aside from keeping Europeans with respiratory conditions on higher alert than usual.

I’ve been biding my time waiting for the chance to blog about Krakatoa. Ever since I stumbled across a PBS show on the great volcano the other night, I’ve been looking for my excuse. I’ve found it.
