Just a few years ago, if you had told me you owned an HTC phone I’d have to ask you what that meant. The company has been around since 1997 but I wasn’t aware of it until 2008. That’s when HTC came out with the G1 Android phone, the first Android-based smartphone available in the United States. Earlier HTC smartphones had Windows Mobile as an operating system.
With Apple getting ready to announce its next iPhone, it makes sense to look at the competition. It is possible that the HTC EVO 4G is the best smartphone available today – reviews have been outstanding. See for example these reviews…
This morning, I read the news on Bloomberg by Serena Saitto and Ari Levy that former PDA powerhouse Palm may be for sale. Qatalyst Partners and Goldman Sachs have been tapped to find a suiter, and it may not take long. Possible bidders include Chinese PC manufacturer Lenovo and smartphone company HTC from Taiwan.
How accurate is a typical touch screen on a smart phone? Not as accurate as you might think. And some are awful. Here is a comparison: More info: – How the iPhone Works – How the iPod Touch Works
Over the last few days, Google has released a series of videos documenting the development and manufacture of the Nexus One smartphone. The third in the series is one that filled me with a sense of dread and unease. The video reveals the testing procedure HTC (which manufactures the Nexus One) uses to determine if a phone is ready for release. HTC puts phones through a series of different tests to check durability and damage resistance. It’s fascinating stuff, though a little hard to watch if you’re a technophile like me.
This walk-thru of the Nexus One user interface demonstrates what Android 2.1 looks like on the Nexus One – and also shows that the phone is very real: The specs are also now available and they are impressive – a fast processor (1GHz Snapdragon) and a large screen (3.7 inches, 854 x 480 pixels): – [...]
The CTIA Wireless trade show is underway in Las Vegas, Nev. If you’re not sure what CTIA is, you’re not alone, but there’s a decent chance that the cell phone you carry with you now was once on display at the show. CTIA is the wireless phone industry association.
So what’s up at this year’s show? Big surprise: smartphones. Oh, wait, that’s no surprise. CNET’s Kent German said that Samsung is going to release a new version of the Instinct, the S30. There aren’t many changes for the Sprint touch screen phone, but it appears that Samsung will make it more possible for developers to write software for the machine, which may make it more appealing to customers who want something more like the Apple iPhone or HTC G1 (based on the Google Android operating system)*.
Speaking of HTC, they have a pretty nifty-looking machine on exhibit as well. Theirs is called the Snap.
