When it rains, it pours. August tends to be a slow month for tech news. As the month began, it looked like this year would follow the trend as tech bloggers and reporters wait for the inevitable plunge toward the holiday shopping season. But some recent events really generated a lot of news in the technosphere. So much news, in fact, that I need to summarize several stories to catch up.

I was surprised to hear the news today: HP is discontinuing the development of webOS devices. Back at CES 2009, I thought webOS had a real chance at making a big splash in the smartphone market. I wasn’t alone. The new operating system from Palm looked flashy and responsive. Granted, most of us couldn’t get our hands on the Palm Pre at the show — Palm was very protective of its new smartphone. But the buzz was strong and it looked like Palm had a shot of competing against the iPhone and Android platforms.

Last week Hewlett-Packard held a press conference to announce how the company would be using the WebOS operating system it acquired when it picked up Palm last year. HP said it would be releasing new phones and tablets with the OS on them, a move that doesn’t really seem so surprising given the positive things the media were saying about WebOS upon its debut.

Until yesterday, if you wanted a tablet computer, you had three options for the operating system: Apple, Android and Windows 7. Today there is a fourth option: WebOS. This is an operating system developed by Palm before HP bought Palm last year. HP has dropped WebOS into a new tablet computer called the TouchPad: Quick [...]

Since it came out early in 2010, the iPad has been indestructible in the marketplace. It has sold millions and millions of units, and almost a year later it has no serious competition. Samsung tried to make a dent with its Tab tablet, but the Tab has not gotten very good reviews at all. See [...]

Usually by August, the tech news well looks a little dry. This year seems to be an exception. Rumors about Apple’s iPhone migrating to Verizon in the United States continue to spread across the Web. According to unnamed sources “close to Apple’s hardware suppliers,” the company has ordered CDMA chips. That’s the cellular technology Verizon uses (Sprint also uses CDMA technology). We could see an iPhone on Verizon as early as January. I’d like to point out we’ve heard similar rumors — or perhaps just wishful thinking — about the iPhone going elsewhere before. We’ll have to wait and see if this time it’s true.

Long ago I wrote the article How Motes Work. It is about a technology also known as smart dust. The idea is that there can be very small, computerized sensors that intercommunicate with each other to gather information about the world.

This video gives you a nice introduction to the smart dust concept…

If you read my post called “Is Palm on the block?” the answer was “yes.” Just a few minutes ago, I read an article by Erica Ogg that revealed that Palm’s winning suitor was Hewlett-Packard. The deal will work out to $5.70 per share of Palm stock — that’s $1.2 billion total.

HP has finally launched a 3D printer… HP’s Designjet 3D series start shipping to wealthy European prototypers …even if it appears to be a rebranding of an existing model from Stratasys. The following video explains the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) used in HP’s printers and Stratasys’: If the price of HP’s printer ($17,000+) scares you [...]

Why would a person spend $1,000 for an Apple laptop when he or she can get more features for $500 by buying a laptop from HP, Dell, Asus, etc? To an Apple loyalist, I imagine this is a silly question. But to anyone else, it makes little sense. Case in point is the iPad, as [...]
