Hormonal Birth Control Colors Women’s Memories, Study Finds
by Cristen Conger | September 14, 2011
A new study out from the University of California, Irvine found that hormonal contraception influences how women remember emotionally provocative events, compared to women who aren’t on birth control. Specifically, naturally cycling women may retain more details about an emotional event (i.e. the type of car involved in a fatal car accident, the accident setting, etc.), whereas women taking birth control pills may better recollect central information, or the “gist” of it.
When discussing the concept of love at first sight on the most recent Stuff Mom Never Told You episode, Molly and I speak solely from the perspective of being able to actually see the object of attraction. But how might that instant magnetism change if you’re blind? According to one blind man’s account, it seems that ‘love at first sight’ then becomes ‘love at first sound’.
Having a baby bring about a host of changes in new moms’ lives — and their brains. A recent neuroimaging study suggests that women experience gray matter growth in certain brain regions during the first few months of motherhood. The added gray matter volume was concentrated in the prefrontal cortex, parietal lobes and midbrain areas that are associated with maternal care. Mothers who openly doted on their babies the most showed the greatest amount of gray matter growth, indicating that the neurological adjustment is the body’s way of prepping women to be good mothers.
This week on Stuff Mom Never Told You, Cristen and I took a head-to-toe look at the female body. We started with the face and a discussion of adult acne. Sure, we know that teenagers can expect some spotty skin, thanks to all those hormonal changes, but did you know that the trouble may not end? That stinks — there’s just no other way to put it. And bad news, ladies: Adult acne is more common in women than men. In exploring this topic, we talked a little bit about why acne can persist (or start up for the first time) in adult years as well as the stigma associated with having bad skin as an adult.

by Cristen Conger | June 28, 2010
A few weeks ago on Stuff Mom Never Told You, Molly and I discussed andropause, better known as male menopause. The condition is characterized by an age-related drop in testosterone levels in some men, leading to symptoms such as decreased sex drive and bone density loss.

Love soft-shell crab sandwiches? Wish you could have them all year? Well, a team of University of Alabama scientists may just have a way to make that happen.
Shakespeare referred to jealousy as a “green-eyed monster,” a beastly emotion that brings out the worst in us. But why do we feel jealous? Are women more jealous than men? Find out how jealousy works in this podcast from HowStuffWorks.com.
