Americans bought around 2 billion Christmas cards in 2010, according to the Greeting Card Association. Despite women making 85 percent of greeting card purchases these days, we send and receive Christmas and holiday cards thanks to a British fellow (kind of like how men invented high heels).

For many of us, the holidays can make us nostalgic. It’s the perfect time of year to reminisce about family, friends, past holiday celebrations and favorite joyful traditions. Over the years as we grow and change, we forge new festive practices with our nearest and dearest, but we also hang on to certain tried and true ones, some of which involve favorite recipes. Holly and I are fans of food, and every season we’ve got something else to look forward to on the menu. When we recorded this episode, it was high pumpkin season, though the year has turned more toward peppermint since then. This seasonality of (processed) food got us thinking: Which treats are available (and heavily marketed) only at certain times of the year? And why?

Luckily, I get along very well with the majority of my relatives. And in the rare situations wherein that’s not quite the case, I’m easygoing enough to be pretty good at bluffing it so they don’t know I’m not much of a fan. Because it’s just not worth it, especially around the holidays. But lots of families aren’t that lucky. While researching for a recent blog post detailing the nomination process for the Ig Nobel Prizes, the research of two particular winners caught my eye. The scientists who received the 2006 prize in mathematics — Nic Svenson and Piers Barnes — studied how many photographs a person needs to take to ensure he or she will get at least one blink-free shot.

Most everyone who knows me knows I love the holidays. Actually, by mid-September each year, I’m in full happy mode because it’s fall (THE best season, of course) and the holidays are just around the corner. Well they’re not just around the corner anymore, folks — they’re upon us: There are only 24 days until Christmas. So to celebrate the season, the next few weeks of my posts are going to be holiday inspired. Today, I want to talk about going green for the holidays.
