Americans bought around 2 billion Christmas cards in 2010, according to the Greeting Card Association. Despite women making 85 percent of greeting card purchases these days, we send and receive Christmas and holiday cards thanks to a British fellow (kind of like how men invented high heels).
PopStuff Show Notes: Episode 21, Holiday Foods: Get Your Pumpkin On
by Tracy V. Wilson | December 5, 2011
Holly and I are fans of food, and every season we’ve got something else to look forward to on the menu. When we recorded this episode, it was high pumpkin season, though the year has turned more toward peppermint since then. This seasonality of (processed) food got us thinking: Which treats are available (and heavily marketed) only at certain times of the year? And why?
I’ll admit, I don’t really do anything to celebrate Easter except eat awesome food with the fam, but that doesn’t mean I pass at the opportunity to put together a fun centerpiece with flowers to brighten up the table, too. So after the jump, there’s a collection of ideas and advice for putting together a lovely little Easter showpiece without spending lots of money.
How to Get Along with Difficult Relatives During the Holidays
by Jessika Toothman | December 24, 2010
Luckily, I get along very well with the majority of my relatives. And in the rare situations wherein that’s not quite the case, I’m easygoing enough to be pretty good at bluffing it so they don’t know I’m not much of a fan. Because it’s just not worth it, especially around the holidays. But lots of families aren’t that lucky. Just spend some time reading this online column and you’ll stumble across myriad examples of dysfunctional relatives struggling to sort out hurtful estrangements and familial entanglements.
How to Ensure Unblinking Eyes in Christmas Photos
by Jessika Toothman | December 22, 2010
While researching for a recent blog post detailing the nomination process for the Ig Nobel Prizes, the research of two particular winners caught my eye. The scientists who received the 2006 prize in mathematics — Nic Svenson and Piers Barnes — studied how many photographs a person needs to take to ensure he or she will get at least one blink-free shot.
Are you hungry for gingerbread cookies? Well then thank goodness UNESCO named Northern Croatia’s “gingerbread craft” an “intangible cultural world heritage”! Two gingerbread craft fun facts …
Most everyone who knows me knows I love the holidays. Actually, by mid-September each year, I’m in full happy mode because it’s fall (THE best season, of course) and the holidays are just around the corner. Well they’re not just around the corner anymore, folks — they’re upon us: There are only 24 days until Christmas. So to celebrate the season, the next few weeks of my posts are going to be holiday inspired. Today, I want to talk about going green for the holidays.
As the song says, it’s the most wonderful time of the year. Don’t you just love the smell of pine and fir, the sight of snow falling, the joyously festive carolers and the overflow of good cheer? No? How about annoying or drunken relatives, cold weather, interminable flight delays and long lines at the mall?
Around this time of year, many people frantically start buying some pretty, pretty, pretty random stuff for their loved ones, myself included. Whether it’s a Big Mouth Billy Bass singing fish, a candle holder in the shaped of a turquoise stiletto or a regifted calendar from the bank, we’re all guilty. With that in mind, I thought I’d compile a few gift ideas for the scientist on your list. Be warned. Some are attainable, some are… well, you’ll see.
