The gigantic oil giant BP had to have been happy to get some good press on October 20, the 6-month anniversary of the beginning one of the two worst oil spills in U.S. history. The explosion that killed 11 rig workers and destroyed the well in the Gulf of Mexico, which ultimately released about 140 million gallons of oil, creating a slick twice the size of New Jersey (about 16,000 square miles).

With millions of gallons of oil still spilling into the Gulf of Mexico, and oil now coming on shore, containment of the oil in the water becomes a priority. The containment technology most used is the floating oil boom. There are schools all across the country that teach oil industry employees how to deploy boom correctly, but it does not appear that these techniques are being used in the Gulf. Earlier this week, I heard about the South Florida teen who shaved her head to make a statement as well as a boom — a hair-stuffed oil boom fashioned to soak up the mess that’s still pouring into the Gulf of Mexico. Since there’s always been a place for strange hair stories on this science blog (“No poo”! Hair mats!), hair booms seem like a logical topic to discuss.
