Is Google preparing to take over the universe? Sounds like a silly question until you look at everything that Google has announced in just the last month. Google is in the process of crushing or getting-ready-to-crush a number of businesses. For example: 1) Google navigation: New Google Navigation app shows what happens when you combine [...]

Now that eBay has reached a settlement with Joltid over the Global Index Software peer-to-peer technology that powers Skype, Skype won’t need VoIP provider Gizmo5 to fall back on. And that’s lucky, since according to the rumor mill, Gizmo5 now belongs to Google, for the tidy sum of $30 million. Michael Arrington at TechCrunch broke the story yesterday.

Making Babies in Space May Be Harder Than It Sounds – “According to Japanese biologists, defects in their microgravity embryos suggest that “fertilization can occur normally” in space, but standard Earth gravity may be needed for embryo development…” ‘Air shower’ set to cut water use by 30 per cent – “Small-scale experiments using the aeration [...]

This morning, I told HowStuffWorks.com editor and TechStuff co-host Chris Pollette that I wouldn’t write about Google or Apple. Looking back over the last two weeks, the TechStuff blog has been absolutely crammed with news about the two companies. But this story, which features both Google and Apple, is big enough to make me break my vow. Don’t worry — once I’m finished writing I’ll stand in the corner for a time out.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt is a man of many hats. But as AP writer Barbara Ortutay points out, one of those chapeaux has got to go — he’s stepping down from Apple’s board of directors. One might ask what he was doing there in the first place. Large corporations frequently appoint people from outside the company to serve on the board. This gives the corporation the benefit of the outsider’s perspective as well as a wealth of experience gained elsewhere.

But then there’s the concept of a conflict of interests. This arises when a member of the board works with an organization that either competes against or works with the company. The board member could, in theory, use his or her influence with the board to a personal advantage. That’s a big no-no in business.

If you heard our podcast last week about Google Voice, you know that it’s a service that lets you create a personal phone number that is yours to keep. It doesn’t matter if you change phone carriers or move across the country — your phone number remains your own. You can use the service to program in the phone numbers for the physical devices you depend upon — your cell phone, work phone and home phone — and use your Google Voice number to route calls to you. You can choose to have all your phones ring whenever someone calls the Google Voice number or tweak it so that each phone will only ring during specific times of the day or only for certain people. It’s a cool product.

Not long ago, Google began creating applications for smartphones like the Blackberry and Android phones that lets you dial out using your Google Voice number. Google Voice works for incoming calls but not outgoing calls (unless you’re logged into your Google Voice Web page — then you can select an option that will cause Google Voice to act like an operator and call your phone and then call the person you want to talk to). But the Google Voice apps allow you to make an outgoing call and will display your Google Voice number to whomever you contact. That way your contact doesn’t get confused with multiple numbers.

According to a report by Claudine Beaumont of The Telegraph, Apple has decided that the Google Voice apps replicate iPhone features. That’s one of the criteria Apple uses to decide if an application is acceptable — anything that duplicates an iPhone feature is right out.

Clearly, Chris and I are agog for Google. Granted, Chris seems to feel a sense of trepidation when it comes to entrusting the behemoth company with all his personal data. I’ve tried to explain to Chris that he shouldn’t vocalize these fears — Google’s watching us. But seriously, we both realize the company has incredible influence within the tech industry and beyond. It should come as no surprise that we have a lot to say about Google’s products.

And we’re not the only ones! Monday’s episode about Google Street View was in response to requests from two listeners. Google Street View is a Web-based service that works with Google Maps. It lets you view a location within a city as if you were standing in the middle of the street. While Google Street View can come in handy when you’re trying to navigate through an unfamiliar part of town, not everyone is thrilled with Google sending out cars with digital cameras to document every square inch of space in town. Listen to the podcast to hear about the trials and triumphs of Google Street View. You’ll also get to hear about a couple of funny art projects and jokes people have performed that were captured by Google’s cameras. We even throw in a tidbit about the images you’ll find in Google Earth.

Google Voice is apparently about to launch, judging by the amount of chatter going on in the tech world right now. This morning I saw an article in PC World by Michael Scalisi that discusses the phone service, and the author seems to think that Google Voice could be a real game-changer.
