Hopefully you’ve finished your Christmas shopping by now. If not, you’ll have to get your hustle on. And maybe next year, plan ahead and visit one of the Christmas markets held traditionally in Germany but found all over the world, including Toronto, Paris, England, Chicago and Georgetown, Colorado. Fulfill all your holiday fantasies at one [...]
Adventure Sleeping at a Mountain Resort in Germany
by Amanda Arnold | November 30, 2011
Do you wish to dangle from great heights while you snooze?
Yes, you do. And you might as well do it in Bavaria, Germany, at an adventure resort called Waldseilgarten. Here at the mountain retreat, you will have three sleep-up-high options. They are as follows:
Lip-locked and Love-locked on a Bridge in Europe
by Amanda Arnold | October 11, 2011
I’ll tell you who isn’t afraid of commitment: the Hohenzollernbruecke bridge in Cologne, Germany. The bridge was reconstructed after it was bombed during World War II, and since then it’s been padlocked with the immortal love of thousands of couples from around the world, according to SFGate. Just look at all these “love locks”!
“Giant Mermaid” Surfaces in German Lake
by Amanda Arnold | August 3, 2011
I spy a giant-lady-sculpture trend.
First “Forever Marilyn”, and now “Giant Mermaid,” who’s sitting in Alster Lake in Hamburg, Germany. Not sure why she’s called a mermaid because she clearly has knees. Also, why isn’t her mascara running? You can’t wear eye makeup under-the-sea.
Germany’s Merkel says Multiculturalism has Failed
by Josh Clark | October 19, 2010
During the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, some people were a tad unsettled at the sight of the German flag being waved proudly by sports fans who showed up in the other nations. Here’s why:
It was less than a week ago when I told you about the challenge to the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1′s record-breaking one-lap time of 7 minutes, 26.4 seconds at the Nürburgring racetrack in Germany. If you recall, it was Dan Watkins, new owner of the one and only (so far) $2 million Stile Bertone Mantide (a corvette ZR1-based supercar), who was going for the bragging rights. But they’re not the only ones battling it out at the Green Hell.
First off, thanks go to Chuck Bryant from Stuff You Should Know for pointing this subject out to me.
Violence in video games has been a topic of discussion for many years. It seems to come up especially when a young person commits a violent act. Different European governments have been discussion possible legislation to ban violent games for years, but it appears Germany’s about to go through with it.
According to Gamezine.co.uk, ministers of the interior for all of the German states met a few weeks ago and agreed to ban production and sales of video games in which the point is to kill people or human-like characters in a realistic way. Gamezine quoted the Lower Saxony minister of the interior as saying “Violent games lower the inhibition level for real violence and spree killers have again and again played such before they did the crime.”
Here in Georgia, there’s a planned city outside of Atlanta that’s known for its preferred method of local travel: golf carts. Many residents own their own carts, special paths crisscross between destinations and kids start manning the wheel at 12. Vauban, Germany does them one better, though with its carless (and cartless) streets.
According to Reuters, a German broadband association called Bitkom surveyed 1,000 Germans aged 19 – 29 and asked them if they had to choose, which would they keep: their current partner (or automobile) or their Internet access. Eighty-four percent of the respondents said they’d rather have the Internet. And the survey equated automobiles with romantic partners? Ouch.
How can a country right next door to France, arguably the most romantic nation on the planet, go so far astray? Granted, Germany has often been the butt of many jokes suggesting its culture values efficiency over sentimentality to the point of being humorless, but that’s just an outrageous stereotype. Isn’t it?
Perhaps this survey is just an example of how intrinsic the Internet and technology have become in our daily lives. The Internet is not really so much of a tool as it is a crutch.
