Holly and I are both gamers, and while I’m kind of an introvert, neither of us minds being around people. Yet, we both play massively multiplayer online games (MMOs) as though they were for single players. Sometimes, it’s like the other people aren’t even there. Why do we do this? Does anyone else?

Making the rounds today in blogs like Jalopnik and SyFy’s Blastr is a study from Continental Tires, whose results suggest that gamers who play lots of racing games are more aggressive, take more risks and judge their driving skills higher than non-gamers.

Based on personal experience, I’m not at all surprised.

I’ve seen a lot of headlines about GameCrush — the service that lets guys pay women to play PC or Xbox games with them, complete with voice chat and cam feed — over the last couple of days. But it took TechStuff’s Jonathan Strickland walking into my office to ask me about it for me to really think anything beyond, “I wonder what the Frag Dolls think of that?” (Answer: If they have an opinion, they haven’t said what it is yet in the Frag Dolls blogs or on Twitter.)

A headline caught my eye in a post from Marshall Brain’s BrainStuff blog today: “Survey: Average Gamer is 35, Fat and Bummed,” from MSNBC. As an avid gamer who may or may not meet (or nearly meet) one or more of those traits, I naturally felt compelled to look. And then, since I work at HowStuffWorks.com, I felt compelled to go read the original paper.

It’s not surprising that “Health-Risk Correlates of Video-Game Playing Among Adults,” published in the October issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, reports such a downer of a conclusion. Its introduction references a litany of studies on the downsides of gaming, which link video games to poor health, aggressive behavior, weight gain, musculoskeletal problems, bad grades, delinquency and, of course, video game addiction.

We’ll get into some of the other reasons for the report’s conclusions after the jump.
