Um, I really like ice cream.

Therefore, I give you the following ice cream travel advice: Go to an ice cream festival. At the Austin Ice Cream Festival on Aug. 13, 2011, you can participate in (or eat the results of) a homemade ice cream making contest. People actually bring in their own equipment to churn ice cream on the spot. Yum.

That’s it. I’m officially hooked on Japanese festivals. I just watched Rachel and Matt’s Coolest Stuff video podcast on the Akita Kanto festival in Japan. Have you seen it? It’s lovely. I mean, first the Sapporo Snow Festival and now this.

Hello folks – if you listen to the podcast then you’ve heard Dr. Clark and I mention this Science Channel show lately, something about pumpkins being flung through the air. The whole thing got me thinking about why humans like to fling things, or this case, chunk things. What is it about us that we’ll put time and money into such a seemingly frivolous undertaking?
