This video make a really interesting point about human population trends: It took 250,000 years for the human population to hit 1 billion. But it only took a little more than a decade to go from 6 billion to 7 billion. As the video points out, population is expected to level out somewhere around 9 [...]

We’ve heard about the forthcoming STD testing app for smartphones. Just yesterday, HowStuffWorks premiered a super fantastic app that is guaranteed to change your life. And as if life couldn’t get any more amazing thanks to cell phones, psychologists have discovered yet another functionality for these gadgets. Cell phones might be able to track a woman’s fertility.

My alternate title for this week’s post was “Stuff Mom Never Told You about the Work of Geoffrey Miller,” for as we mentioned, Miller’s work played a part in both of our podcasts this week. This week we discussed fertility from two different perspectives.

First up, we talked about ovulation in women. How many times have you seen a study that claimed women act differently (causing, in turn, men to act differently) when they’re at their most fertile? One such study that sticks in my mind was authored in part by Man of the Week Geoffrey Miller — it dealt with the finding that ovulating strippers make a lot more in tips than they do at any other time of the month, whereas women on the pill made a flat rate all month. It turns out ovulating women also wear different clothing, walk differently and sound differently at peak fertility.

MSNBC reported yesterday that a fertility clinic in Los Angeles (shocker) is now allowing prospective parents to pick and choose certain physical characteristics of their baby-to-be. Yes, this means that if you have the cash, you can order a baby with blonde hair and blue eyes if you so desire.

The clinic claims it’s already gotten half a dozen requests for these “designer babies” and expects to roll out the first line next year. The method used to screen for these characteristics is called preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). It’s been used since 1990 to help couples avoid passing on serious genetic diseases to their babies. It’s also been used to help create “savior siblings” — babies that are a good genetic match for older brothers or sisters that might need some blood or bone marrow, for instance.
