Cristen and I are preparing a podcast about why so many girls like horses, and in the course of doing some research, I did some reading about Penny Chenery, the woman who managed the famous horse while raising a family. Chenery is portrayed by actress Diane Lane in the current film “Secretariat,” and many reviews of the movie usually make mention of the fact that Chenery’s success with her Triple Crown-winning horse is all the more impressive because horse racing was such a male-dominated field.

That’s why I was interested — and a little saddened, too — too see an Associated Press interview in which both Lane and Chenery go to great lengths to distance themselves from the idea of feminism.

You know what’s a fun topic to bring up on a first date with a guy? Feminism. Once you get hard-lined religious and political beliefs out of the way (preferably in the car, on the way to date destination or maybe during the appetizer if you must wait that long), I highly recommend you toss out a couple of Betty Friedan or bell hooks quotes, and see if the gent picks up on it and responds with an appropriate Simone de Beauvoir reference.
Awkward silences — not gonna happen, guaranteed.

A while back on Stuff Mom Never Told You, Molly and I took on the question of whether a female equivalent to ‘bachelor’ existed. The word ‘bachelor’ conjures up images of suave George Clooney, the handsome, unmarried man who simply can’t be confined to the embrace of just one woman. What about pop culture’s consummate [...]

This week on the podcast, I discovered my true calling. After researching Monday’s podcast about the gender stereotypes associated with musical instruments, I thought my true calling was to travel the world playing the lute. The lute has many gender connotations, and I’d like to travel the world jamming on the lute and explaining this historical instrument to the masses. But it turns out this was a false calling. My REAL true calling occurred when researching Wednesday’s podcast, which was about the alarming shortage of female magicians. It turns out I am destined to be a magician, and for my first trick, I shall make this podcast recap appear!

It’s Thursday, which is when Cristen and I spend time in the studio recording our Stuff Mom Never Told You podcasts. It’s also the day that I look back at the podcasts that are brand new on iTunes. If you haven’t been over there to take a listen, here’s a sneak peek at what we discussed.

On Monday, we presented “The Not-So-Skimpy History of the Bikini.” Perfect for summer, no?

I didn’t know about Wilma Mankiller until I read her obituary on April 6 of this year, but as soon as Cristen and I got a look at her story, we knew we had to do a podcast about this remarkable woman. On Monday’s episode of Stuff Mom Never Told You, we explored the highs and lows of Mankiller’s life and provided a brief overview of the issues facing Native American women today.

People have been buzzing about James Cameron’s “Avatar” for so long that it’s almost impossible to get away from the questions, even now, a day before it opens in the U.S. Critics seem to be settling mostly on “no” to the all-important query, “Will this be a giant train wreck?” But the jury’s still out on whether the Na’vi look real or cartoony and whether the story is unique or basically an interstellar “Dances with Wolves.”

And then there are the questions about social issues, from racism to disability rights — and, of course, whether “Avatar” is sexist.

I’ve read a lot of discussion in the blogosphere about “Dollhouse” over the last few months. Posts at The Angry Black Woman and This Ain’t Livin’ refer to the show’s events as rape. Then there are the 25+ pages of comments at the Television Without Pity forums discussing whether the show is feminist. And now that the first season has ended, I’m finding the show’s events, which deal with a corporation that imprints human bodies with new personalities before selling their services to wealthy clients, hard to classify.
