Monday night I was driving home and listening to All Things Considered on National Public Radio. The All Tech Considered segment runs on Monday evenings, and yesterday Robert Siegel interviewed Richard Littlehale and Bob Casey of YouRenew, a company that will pay you to take your old electronics off your hands.

Where do the 24 electronics products sitting in the average American home go when they die? The EPA estimates that we sent more than 1.85 million tons of TVs, cell phones and computer products — a.k.a. e-waste — to landfills in 2006. And by 2015, a survey from Pike Research (via CNET) says that the global e-waste volume will reach 73 million tons.

If you live in the United States, it appears as though the changeover from analog to digital television (DTV) signals is finally going through. After a couple years of preparation and lots and lots of ads running on your local television stations, it’s all supposed to swap over Friday.

The transition is meant to free up broadcast spectrum for emergency organizations and commercial wireless services. It also brings with it clearer television signals and the possibility of multicasting, or broadcasting multiple signals on the same frequency. Some stations transitioned early and have already been taking advantage of multicasting. In fact, the U.S. government says that 42 percent of TV stations already have made the switch.

But despite the delay enforced by the government earlier this year, it looks like there are still millions of people who haven’t bought digital converters. Either they haven’t gotten the message, they can’t afford a converter or they just don’t care.

Of all of the things I’ve written about this week, I think this one really belongs at #1. Our electronic gear is very cool. It simplifies our lives and makes them complex, all at the same time. But one thing is for certain: Getting these gadgets and gizmos to work requires the use of some nasty materials.
