Phreaking on the Phone and Wielding Swords and Lasers
by Jonathan Strickland | September 24, 2010
This week on TechStuff was special. Chris wrote about it the other day. But as is our custom, we give you guys a roundup each week of what we talked about so now you’ll get to hear my take on it. Our episode on Monday was all about phone phreaking, the precursor to computer hacking. Wednesday’s show was our Dragon*Con special and featured guest appearances by Sword and Laser cohosts Tom Merritt and Veronica Belmont.
A few days ago, Katie wrote about the panel in which we participated at Dragon*Con with Stuff You Missed in History Class. It was a lot of fun, and I’m glad we had the chance to take part. But Jonathan and I also had the opportunity to sit down with a couple of well-respected tech journalists, Tom Merritt and Veronica Belmont, to do a very special episode of TechStuff.
Former Sorority Girl Braves Dragon*Con, Feels the Love
by Katie Lambert | September 20, 2010
When Sarah and I were asked to speak at Dragon*Con on a podcast panel with Jonathan and Chris of TechStuff, we jumped at the chance. Sarah wrote a great post about steampunk’s connections to the green movement, but what fascinated me most was the costuming — and the meaning behind the pageantry.
This will surprise absolutely no one, but my favorite part of Dragon*Con 2010 had to be the costumes. I saw people dressed as characters from everything from “Firefly” to “Lord of the Rings” to “Watchmen.” Some were extremely well-made — I couldn’t quite capture the Ghostbusters with ultra-realistic proton packs that lit up — while others contented themselves with wearing clever t-shirts.
Alternate History at Dragon*Con: Steampunk Goes DIY
by Sarah Dowdey | September 9, 2010
Dragon*Con’s been in Atlanta for nearly 25 years, but this year’s Con was my first. Along with Chris and Jonathan from TechStuff and Tracy from the FanStuff blog, Katie and I spoke at a panel this weekend, answering all sorts of questions about what it takes to make a podcast at HowStuffWorks.com.
The conversation obviously skewed modern — how to effectively use the Web for research, tips on digital note-compiling software, using social media to connect with listeners. But after our talk was over, Katie and I went back 150 years or so, or forward, depending on how you look at it.
It’s the Wednesday after my first Dragon*Con, and my poor tootsies are still on fire. I had a wonderful time, but I wasn’t at all prepared for the crowds, the noise or the sheer craziness that dominated the weekend. I knew all three would show up in abundance, but I’d forgotten what 40,000 people squeezed into four blocks looks like.
I headed to Peachtree Center fairly early Saturday morning, thinking I had a little time to set up and get comfy before the deluge hit. The steampunk horde I rode MARTA with should’ve been my first hint that I’d thought wrong. By the time I’d joined the throngs at the Hyatt Regency, one of this year’s four official convention hotels, I realized that what I didn’t know about Dragon*Con could probably fill the Hyatt. So, along with my newbie confessions, I’ll share the five things I wish I’d known about Dragon*Con before I stepped into the fray.
Everything You Need to Know About ‘True Blood’ in One Dragon*Con Panel
by Tracy V. Wilson | September 3, 2010
The more I work on FanStuff, the more curious I become about how people interact with TV shows, movies and other media, whether they’re the creators or the fans. This morning, the 10 a.m. “True Blood” panel at Dragon*Con drove the point home. On the panel were Kristin Bauer (Pam De Beaufort), Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette Reynolds) and Sam Trammell (Sam Merlotte). Read on for the shenanigans they got up to.
You can expect a lot of familiar sights at a science fiction/fantasy convention … vampires, elves and Boba Fetts immediately come to mind. What you might not expect is women in 1940s-era costumes, complete with matching shoes and hats, singing World War II-era songs to support the USO of Georgia. But that’s what happened at Thursday night’s Yellow Ribbon Party in one of the Marriott Marquis ballrooms at Dragon*Con 2010. Local Renaissance Festival favorite Half Pint played, along with Thimblerig Circus and others, passing the hat for the USO along the way.
HowStuffWorks.com Podcasters Take to the Stage at Dragon*Con 2010
by Tracy V. Wilson | September 3, 2010
If you follow along with FanStuff, you know I love Dragon*Con. I love the excitement of all the fans, whether they’re waiting to see the stars of their favorite shows, recreating costumes with painstaking detail or debating the plot twists of the latest episode, issue or installment in a fan panel. This year, I’m doubly excited — HowStuffWorks.com is having a panel as part of Podcasting Now and Beyond, the Dragon*Con podcast track. It’s particularly amazing since the podcasting track has such a great history of hosting amazing panels full of terrific podcasters. All of us are honored and excited. Find out the whens and wheres after the jump.
At Dragon*Con — or any big convention, really — program guides and schedule grids are basically a starting point in figuring out what to do. There are last-minute guest cancellations due to illnesses, travel problems and working commitments (after all, many of the convention guests are essentially there as part of their jobs, and sometimes other duties call). And then there are the parties planned on the fly. And the spontaneous meet-ups of like-minded fans. And the guests you’ve been dying to meet who are having drinks and chatting it up down in the hotel lobby. Dragon*Con deals with the chaos with a daily newsletter, and you can get more up-to-the-minute information on Twitter.
