British-born, New Yorker photographer Steve Pyke has made it his mission to document historically important individuals through portraiture and still-life photography. Having previously worked with World War II veterans and Holocaust survivors, he recently turned his attention to profiling the iconic individuals who helped define the 20th century through manned lunar exploration.

If you happen to find yourself fumbling for something to watch on Netflix Streaming this weekend, might I suggest giving “Independent Lens: Between the Folds” a whirl? I know 56 minutes might seem like a lot of screen time to devote to paper folding, but this PBS documentary takes you past all the breathtaking beauty of the craft and into origami‘s place amid theoretical mathematics and cutting-edge technology. Parasites compose some of the more fascinating and successful organisms on the planet, but it’s hard not to focus on the yuck factor when there’s a botfly larva squirming inside a dude’s head. So it’s pretty cool to see a short documentary with a different approach hitting festivals around the country: Sharon Shattuck‘s “Parasites: A User’s Guide.” Lets watch the extended trailer and interview the artist behind it all, shall we?

There are some areas of this country that are just associated with artists. Most people know San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury area, as well as New York’s Harlem and SoHo neighborhoods, as creative enclaves. That said, it may surprise some to learn that one of the more prolific artistic movements of the last century took place not in San Francisco or Manhattan, but in Brooklyn.
