Was it even intended to be political at all? Maybe that’s a better question to ask. By now, you know the one I’m talking about, right? The Clint Eastwood “It’s Halftime in America” commercial for Chrysler. I won’t say too much about this, mainly because I want to hear what you think in the comment section below. However, I will tell you this…

What happens when you augment a Detroit firefighter‘s helmet with a Contour HD helmet camera? Well, for starters you gain a new appreciation for the risks these brave men and women face, as well as destructive beauty of the flame. Check out this amazing footage from the upcoming documentary “BURN: One Year on the Front Lines of the Battle to Save Detroit.”

Behold the power of social media and 80s action cinema: A group of Detroit residents have raised more than $50,000 to build a statue of RoboCop in the city’s downtown area. The craziest part? It only took them six days to do it.

Actually, scratch that: The nuttiest part of this story is how the statue came to be in the first place.

I have an affinity for Detroit, despite being accused of different in the podcast. It is true that I from time to time use the town as an example of social decay, but I am merely carrying on a longstanding comic tradition by picking on Detroit.

Detroit as a punchline doesn’t even make sense any longer. The city is no longer simply going to pot; there are people working to push Detroit to make a comeback. Everybody knows Tempe’s Detroit now. Detroit’s just Detroit.

A blog post on Urban Semiotic attempts to point out that there’s no such thing as coincidence. We humans tend to construct coincidences to amuse ourselves or to seek solace in the idea that there is some all-knowing being tittering behind his wizard’s sleeve as he sets up impossible scenarios to play out and watches us react like the comic strip version of Little Orphan Annie when she’s startled.

On Halloween back in 2001, somebody set fire to St. John’s Anglican Church in Lunenberg, Nova Scotia. This wouldn’t be particularly noteworthy in itself, as people do set fire to churches from time to time, and especially on Halloween, a tradition that traces its roots back to our beloved Detroit. But this particular act of arson uncovered a mystery that was recounted on the CBC recently.

The TechStuff electromagnet-a-palooza continues this week with discussions about the electric guitar and ways to transmit power wirelessly. But before I get into further detail, I need to get something off my chest. I’ve been known to poke fun at a few easy targets. Canadians, Steve Ballmer and the Amish have all felt the sting of my barbed wit. But recently, one city has had to absorb more abuse from me than any other: Detroit. I just want to say that I only kid because I love and not because Detroit’s professional football team wasn’t able to win a single game in the 2008 season — not once out of 16 attempts. Whew! It feels good to get that off my chest.

Oooo, lordy, I love it when the liberals are in power. I’m about to make me a cool $4,500 from the federal government. NPR was all atwitter on the way in to work with news of the Cash for Clunkers bill that’s easily made its way through the House and is poised to pass the Senate sometime in the near future. The bill gives a nearly five grand rebate to people who trade in their cars that get 18 miles or less to the gallon for a car that gets 28 miles or more per gallon.

This here’s the alligator station putting the hammer down to help you ditch the boy scouts and have a smooth ride to Hot Town. In other words, it’s time to look at the topics Chris and I covered this week in TechStuff.

Monday’s episode was our second Listener Mail Roundup Jamboree. We answered three e-mails in this episode. The first topic was about what you should do if you suspect you’ve encountered an online fraud or scam. Even if you don’t fall for the trick yourself, it’s important to pass the information along to the authorities so that other people don’t become victims. Learn more in the podcast.

The next e-mail asked us to explain the difference between hardware, firmware and software. Hardware and software are fairly clear-cut terms. But firmware, that mysterious construct that exists somewhere between hardware and software, is a little more difficult to explain. But Chris and I give it the old college try and provide several examples of firmware throughout our discussion.
