The U.S. Navy has a pretty cool history of tapping the hive mind to solve problems, beginning with the loss of the USS Scorpion, a nuclear submarine, in June 1968. The Scorpion set out for Norfolk, Virginia from a base in Spain but never showed up and an extensive search was launched but yielded nothing. It’s now thought that the Soviets sunk her.

There’s a big debate over whether exporting democracy is a sound idea. On the one hand, you’ve got all the good things that come with it, like egalitarianism, the rule of law and kids holding hands and skipping everywhere. On the other hand, you’ve got free markets, corporate exploitation and homogenization.

On Wednesday, CBS News said, Moldovan riot police in the capital of Chisenau took back the country’s Parliament building and president’s office after they’d been taken over by protesters. They contend that the outcome of the parliamentary elections was arranged in favor of the ruling Communist Party.

Protests happen all the time, so why am I writing about it in the TechStuff blog? In this case, pro-democracy forces organized their demonstrations using Twitter and Facebook.
