Hello there, everybody, and welcome to the TechStuff Podcast Roundup! I have to use my patented introduction because otherwise you wouldn’t know it was me. I look so much different in your headphones.
On Monday, Jonathan and I talked about convergence. It’s his favorite word (as most of you all know), and it’s all about how products take on the roles that once were handled by multiple devices, such as smartphones, which function as phones, computers, GPS devices and even compasses, these days. We may be nearing a time when we have one box that lets us send e-mail, play games, read books, make calls and manage our calendars. Just don’t lose yours — because all your data is in it.
Then on Wednesday, we talked about green technology. It’s a very popular topic right now, but we wondered — is it here to stay, or just a trend?
Technological convergence occurs when multiple technologies combine in a new form of technology. Tune in to this podcast from HowStuffWorks.com to hear Jonathan and Chris discuss the evolution of convergence.
This post may not make those of you who have to have the latest and greatest technology just as soon as it comes out very happy. Why? Because one of the best ways to use less electricity for the gadget hound is to — use fewer of them!
Did you hear that? It was like millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror.
Jaymi Heimbuch wrote a post over at Treehugger, in which she suggests buying fewer electronic devices might have a significant impact on worldwide energy usage, which the International Energy Agency expects will triple by 2030. Heimbuch’s post compares two different types of people, the Gottahavist and the Minimalist. Gottahavists are the type of folks who want multiple computers, TVs, DVD/Blu-ray players, DVRs, cell phones, MP3 players and all the other electronics you can cram in your home and pockets.
Minimalists, in comparison, rely on Jonathan Strickland’s favorite word: convergence.
