Coffee and Ice Cream in Vienna
by Kathryn Whitbourne | December 9, 2011
This podcast was partially inspired by Rachel and my love of coffee. And Vienna is world-famous for its coffee houses, where intellectuals gathered in the days before home central heating, to discuss the ideas of the day (and still do). While in the U.S., we tend to think of Viennese coffee as very specifically prepared [...]
Genes: Why I Drink Coffee Until I Can’t Breathe
by Josh Clark | April 11, 2011
I have just figured out what the lump on the inside of my right forearm is. It’s my oversized CYP1A2 gene, the one responsible for caffeine metabolism cravings. WebMD recently ran an article (thanks for the link, LOML) on how researchers are finding that genes likely play a role in a desire for more caffeine in some people than in others. Really, the concept could change our understanding of addiction, or cravings at least.
Scott writes in with this question:

The only difficulty is that…
This video contains several amazing, startling facts about the use of disposable coffee cups (like the kind you get at Starbucks) in the United States…
How about some rainforest with your cup of joe?

With even the weakest brew of coffee, it’s likely you’ll find some pretty strong opinions ground up in the mix. Everything from taste, roast, fair trade, organics and even snobbery (Bux? Quelle horreur!). One of the newer distinctions on the block is “shade grown” or “bird friendly” beans, although until the 1970s, there wasn’t anything but.
