There are so many things revealed in this video…
- The fact that car production, once dominated by the U.S. and Japan, is now dominated by China both in terms of production and consumption
- The massive number and size of China’s cities
- The incredible change that is coming in the way China thinks about and makes cars
It is fascinating and eye opening…
Another week has flown by here at HowStuffWorks, which means there are two new Stuff Mom Never Told You podcasts that you can check out. First up this week, we discussed the Chinese practice of foot-binding. It was very interesting to learn about the women who bound their feet in secret after the Chinese government banned the practice in 1912. The women would undo the bandages during the day, when they might be seen by inspectors, only to re-bind them at night.
Today, Google reversed its move of redirecting search from Google.cn to its Hong Kong Web site, according to CNET’s Tom Krazit. You may remember, a few months ago Jonathan wrote about the possibility that Google may leave the world’s largest Internet market as the result of a successful hacking attack against Google’s Chinese presence and those of several other prominent Western companies.
Thanks to listener Christine for sending Molly and me a copy of the Hong Kong government’s work visa form she recently filled out. The marital status choices are married, divorced, widowed, separated or….bachelor/spinster.
Imagine getting on a high-speed train in downtown New York City and arriving at Union Station in Washington DC, 230 miles away, just an hour later. This is the ultimate promise of true High Speed Rail (HSR). Compared to driving a car, this train trip would be dream. The car ride would take about four [...]
This short (22 minute) documentary goes a long way toward explaining the rise of Chinese Honker (hacker) culture. One quote from around the 4:50 point: Honkers are a group of ambitious young people who use internet technology to show their love for country. It’s an expression of nationalism. From the Video’s description: Last month, Google, [...]
Journalists writing on matters of interest to China and Taiwan have had their Yahoo e-mail accounts compromised, according to a report from Lucy Hornby and Alexei Oreskovic at Reuters. This news follows reports of a similar incident at Google, which has led the company to cease censorship of its search results in China.
When last we left Google and China, the two were locked in a standoff. Google, the victim of IP theft, made the breach in security public. While no one has explicitly implicated the Chinese government in the attacks, Google’s response suggests that executives feel China was at least partly involved. Now it looks like Google is ready to close up the search shop in China completely.
Some interesting news came from Google last night, and many news sites have already touched on it. Here’s the story in a nutshell: the company’s servers came under attack in China. Whoever instigated the attack was after information, and reports yesterday said that the accounts of dissidents were targeted. We know from Google’s blog post written by company Senior Vice President, Corporate Development and Chief Legal Officer David Drummond that the attack was successful and the hackers accessed intellectual property.
World Record #119 – The world’s fastest train and longest track are in China
by Marshall Brain | December 11, 2009
China continues to kick America’s butt with the opening of a new long distance high-speed train. The train travels between Wuhan in Central China and Guangzhou in South China. The track is just over 1,000 km long (621 miles), and the train travels at close to 400 km/hr (250 MPH). There is a nice video [...]
